The fast good company McDonalds has announced it will temporarily close its restaurants in Russia,

following intense pressure to take a stand over the Kremlin-ordered invasion of Ukraine. In a statement the company said: “our values mean we cannot ignore the needless human suffering unfolding in Ukraine.”

McDonalds said it employed 62,000 people in Russia who had “poured their heart and soul” into the brand. It promised to continue to pay its employees in Russia and Ukraine.

The decision of the fast-food chain to temporarily pause its operations in Moscow is a landmark moment in Russia’s deepening economic isolation.

McDonalds was one of the first western companies to open a branch in Russia in the dying days of the Soviet Union. Thousands of Muscovites queued to get a taste of the west, when the first McDonalds opened in January 1990.

Russia has instructed all state-owned websites and services to switch to the Russian domain name system by 11 March, according to Russian state media outlets.

“This is necessary to protect resources from cyber attacks and the possibility of disconnection from the outside,” the Kommersant Russian newspaper reports.

Citing the ministry of digital development, the publication said there are no plans to disconnect Russia from the global internet.

The ministry of digital development told Kommersant that these measures are necessary to protect against cyberattacks:

So, stay conneced or disconnect? that is the uestion

Probably this is driving it:

The group added that activists are also broadcasting troll faces on Russian military radio.

President Putin and his driver were on their way to Kyiv in a car

when all of a sudden they hit a pig near a farmhouse, killing it instantly.

Putin told his driver to go up to the farmhouse and explain to the owners what had happened. About one hour later Putin sees his driver staggering back to the car with a bottle of Horilka (Ukrainian vodka) in one hand, a cigar in the other

"What happened to you?" asked Putin.

"Well, the farmer gave me the Horilka, his wife gave me a box of cigars
"My God, what did you tell them?" asks Putin.

The driver replies, "I'm president Putin’s driver, and I just killed the pig."

I tamed the joke down a little to keep it PG, 😋

Fears grow Russia could use US basketball star Brittney Griner as 'hostage'

A Texas congresswoman has called for Russia to release Brittney Griner as fears grow Vladimir Putin could use the US basketball star as a pawn during the war in Ukraine.

The two-time Olympic champion has been detained by Russian customs authorities, who claim they discovered vape cartridges containing hashish oil in her luggage at an airport near Moscow. The arrest took place last month and the 31-year-old faces up to 10 years in prison if found guilty of bringing drugs into Russia.

Visa and Mastercard suspend Russian operations, or did they???

US-based credit card giants Visa and Mastercard have both just announced they will sanction Russia by suspending their Russian business operations.

Visa Inc, based in California, issued a statement that said: “Visa will work with its clients and partners within Russia to cease all Visa transactions over the coming days. Once complete, all transactions initiated with Visa cards issued in Russia will no longer work outside the country and any Visa cards issued by financial institutions outside of Russia will no longer work within the Russian Federation.”

Mastercard: “We have decided to suspend our network services in Russia. This decision flows from our recent action to block multiple financial institutions from the Mastercard payment network, as required by regulators globally. With this action, cards issued by Russian banks will no longer be supported by the Mastercard network. And, any Mastercard issued outside of the country will not work at Russian merchants or ATMs [cash point machines].”

So, sounds like Visa cards issued in Russia can still be used in Russia. A little smoke & mirrors maybe?

Also: Reuters news agency noted that the Tass Russian news agency had reported that Sberbank Rossii PAO, Russia’s largest lender, said sanctions announced by Visa Inc and Mastercard Inc would not affect users of the cards it issues in Russia when used inside Russia.
