RainCaster's JournalNetflix: A Monster Calls
It looks scary, and it might be for anyone younger than Jr High. It's adult material (death, bullying), but it turns out to be a very high quality film. I would watch this again.
Two thumbs up.
Washington's Access Online is down
I've been collecting unemployment for some time now. It's my ritual to fill out the online forms every Sunday morning, and today the website is at a snails pace. I am getting kicked out by random server errors, but each time I get one step closer. I can now see that I have emails waiting for me from the state.
All this after having the state tell me that they exposed my bank account transfer information to hackers last year. Incompetence is rampant in my state government. Of course they rewrote the site to use pop-ups, which no modern browser allows.
Lyrics have been a big distraction lately
I always have music going while I'm working during the day. Same when I'm perusing DU. Lately, I noticed how my music client will display the lyrics of the songs I'm listening to. WARNING: big distraction. I love watching the lyrics being posted in front of me. Satisfies an inner need to understand what the geniuses are saying to me...
I've gotta stop this, or I will never get anything done.
Too frightening
To listen to a stranger
Too beautiful
To put your pride in danger
You're waiting for
Someone to understand you
But you've got demons in your closet
(You've got demons in your closet)
And you're screaming out to stop it
(And you're screaming out to stop it)
Saying life's begun to cheat you
Friends are out to beat you
Grab on to what you can scramble for
I will get my shot tomorrow- the opportunities are expanding
My wife too! I'm 62, and she's (less than that), so we don't qualify yet, except for one thing. Our daughter is living at home with us, and she's in health care. So now the list has expanded in my state to include those in health care households. It makes sense. The vaccine opportunities are opening up...
The DOJ can make it difficult for Trump to ever run for office
If he is in prison for the rest of his life, it will be very difficult for him to run for office. Even harder for anyone to justify sending any funds to his campaign.
Dorf: What the Constitution's Text Does Not Say Plainly About Impeachment
This is a very well written piece by one of our country's foremost legal scholars. It's open to all, so feel free to click here and enjoy the whole article, along with the supporting links.
TL/DR: Just because the Constitution does not explicitly say you can convict a former POTUS, does not mean you can't.

Robinghood is playing more games today
The subReddit group WallStreetBets is livid today, because Robinhood sold out huge numbers of option contracts and stock positions without permission of the owners. Many other nasty bits of market manipulation have gone down here as well, if you believe the r/WallStreetBets group.
It turns out that the firm (Robinhood) is 40% owned by the same firm that owns the hedge fund (Melvin) who's being squeezed. The number of folks joining the class action is climbing rapidly. For a colorful look at this, check out @ClassActionRH on Twitter.
The Religous Right whackos have a new friend
In looking at all that the Far Right Christian movement has done for this country, I'm excited to see that they have a new friend in the international sphere of influence. Yes, when it comes to "constitooshunel rights" relating to face masks, social distancing and business closings, the religious right choose not to "render to Caesar", but instead insists that they are not only experts of Constitutional Law, but pandemic medicine as well.
According to the WaPo (sorry, but it's a paywall), the Far Religious Right in Israel has the same methods of dealing with their government. The article is entitled "Violence erupts in Israels ultra-Orthodox neighborhoods over covid restrictions", and the link is here.
Rioters burned trash and toppled street signs and light poles in several cities across Israel. In Bnei Brak, a bus driver was pulled from his seat and pepper sprayed before the vehicle was torched, according to news and social media reports, leading to several buildings being evacuated as the blaze damaged electric lines. At one point, a cornered police officer fired into the air to halt the advancing crowd.
The riots were eventually quelled in some neighborhoods by police wielding stun grenades and water cannons.
The unrest has been growing in recent weeks as police have stepped up enforcement within insular ultra-Orthodox communities, which traditionally resist government authority. On Friday, protesters attacked a police vehicle patrolling Bnei Brak.
