HAB911's Journal1,000 foreign-born military recruits facing deportation under proposed Pentagon plan
One thousand foreign-born military recruits are facing deportation under a proposed Pentagon plan to cancel enlistment contracts for those without legal immigration status, reports The Washington Post.
A Defense Department memo obtained by The Washington Post highlights potential security threats in the Military Accessions Vital to National Interest (MAVNI) program, which was implemented to accelerate citizenship in exchange for crucial medical and language skills.
In addition to the cancellation of contracts for some foreign-born recruits, 4,100 troops could undergo enhanced screening. Most of the 4,100 are naturalized citizens, and the Pentagon raised concerns on how to proceed with significant legal constraints of continuous monitoring of citizens without cause, per the report.
The MAVNI program was launched by the Defense Department in 2009. In the programs eight-year history, 10,400 troops have come through the program to fill vital medical and language billets.

Sea Shepherd Vessel Hit by Fishing Boat
A Sea Shepherd vessel suffered minor damage on Wednesday when it was struck by a fishing boat in the Coiba marine reserve, off the Pacific coast of Panama.
The environmental organization was monitoring and documenting fishing boats engaged in long-line fishing inside the reserve, when its cutter, the M/V John Paul DeJoria, was surrounded by five fishing boats at around 3pm.
According to the crew, the fishermen threatened the group by throwing items at the vessel and gesturing and shouting aggressively. The 110-foot Island class patrol boat was then rammed by one of the five boats.
The Sea Shepherd crew tried to contact a nearby Panamanian Aero naval vessel by radio for assistance but were unable to reach it. The crew reported the incident and boats to Coiba park rangers.

Newton, Mass. (June 26, 2017) A new analysis shows that septic systems in the United States routinely discharge pharmaceuticals, consumer product chemicals, and other potentially hazardous chemicals into the environment. The study, published June 15 in the journal Environmental Science & Technology, is the most comprehensive assessment to date of septic systems as important sources of emerging contaminants, raising health concerns since many of these chemicals, once discharged, end up in groundwater and drinking water supplies.
Known as contaminants of emerging concern (CECs), these types of pollutants are frequently detected in U.S. rivers, lakes, and drinking water supplies. However, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency does not currently regulate them in drinking water. Many emerging contaminants are hormone disruptors. Their presence in the environment has been associated with the feminization of male fish and reduced fertility in other wildlife. And studies in humans have linked some CECs with thyroid disease, developmental disorders, decreased fertility, and even cancer.
These are chemicals found in the products we use every day, and eventually they make their way down the drain, says Laurel Schaider, an environmental chemist at Silent Spring Institute and the studys lead author. Whats concerning is that we are potentially re-exposed to these chemicals as mixtures through our drinking water and we have no idea what the health effects from those exposures are.
Approximately 20 percent of U.S. households rely on septic systems to process their wastewater. In some parts of the country, the number is much higher. In Cape Cod, Massachusetts, for instance, 85 percent of residents rely on septic systems. Although septic systems are known sources of nutrient pollution and have been associated with disease outbreaks, questions remain regarding the extent to which they contribute emerging contaminants to the environment.

Trump Backs Off Plan to Attack Comeys Conduct
Donald Trumps lawyers will postpone filing a complaint against former FBI Director James Comey with the Justice Department, according to a person familiar with the decision -- a bid to stop antagonizing the special counsel whos investigating ties between the presidents campaign and Russian officials.
Trumps lawyer, Marc Kasowitz, planned to file a complaint with the Justice Departments inspector general about Comey. The ousted FBI director told the Senate on June 8 that he had arranged for memos he wrote documenting conversations with the president to be described to news reporters. Trump was furious about what he considered an illegal "leak" by Comey.
The presidents lawyers still intend to file a complaint at some point, the person familiar with the matter said. The person insisted on anonymity to discuss the presidents legal strategy. The delay is a professional courtesy to the special counsel, Robert Mueller, and a signal that the White House understands he needs space to do his job, the person said.
Trump has previously criticized Mueller, repeatedly attacking him and his investigation on Twitter as a witch hunt. His remarks have prompted speculation he would try to fire the special counsel; the White House has recently said he wont.
