There is so much we do NOT know about the novel #coronavirus

Coronavirus and the human bodyPeople are exposed to a coronavirus through mucusn membranes of the eyes, nose and mouth via respiratory droplets.

In less than 24 hours, Children's National Hospital in Washington, D.C., admitted several children with COVID-19 who are also experiencing a constellation of symptoms that resemble "Kawasaki disease," a rare inflammatory syndrome typically affecting children under the age of 5.

On Wednesday, a representative from Children's National Hospital said the children exhibited “Kawasaki-like characteristics," joining a growing number of hospitals in the U.S. and U.K. that have reported similar cases. The representative has since confirmed that one of these children was officially diagnosed with Kawasaki disease. Symptoms of the disease include fever, rash, eye irritation, swollen lymph nodes and/or swelling of the hands and feet.

The disease- has been linked to COVID-19 in some children, but the exact cause remains a medical mystery.

These American cases are raising new concerns of a new global pattern emerging of critically ill children with COVID-19.

On Sunday, the Paediatric Intensive Care Society (PICS) in the U.K. tweeted about a rise in cases of children in critical condition. These children were manifesting a “hyperinflammatory state” that was “multi-system” and seemed to share common features with two existing rare diseases, alarming medical experts.

The link between Kawasaki syndrome and COVID-19 is still not well established. The UK Kawasaki Disease Foundation released a statement Wednesday, saying that many children with the disease tested negative for COVID-19 and “there is no current evidence of any increased incidence or greater susceptibility to COVID-19 infection for children who had Kawasaki Disease in the past.” ......................

Intelligence officials and disease experts are shooting down Trump's claim that the US has good reason to believe the coronavirus originated in a Wuhan lab
Ashley Collman 7 hours ago

President Donald Trump on Thursday said he had seen evidence that the coronavirus outbreak originated in a research lab in Wuhan, China, but is "not allowed to tell anyone" what it is.

A few hours later, The Washington Post published a report — citing intelligence officials and disease experts — that contradicted this claim.
The Post's sources said there's no evidence connecting the outbreak to the lab, and that the lab accident theory is possible but not likely.

President Donald Trump on Thursday said he had seen evidence that shows the coronavirus originated in a Chinese lab, but US intelligence sources and disease experts seem to be contradicting this claim.

At Thursday's White House daily coronavirus press briefing, Trump said US authorities were looking into the Wuhan Institute of Virology, which has previously conducted extensive research on coronaviruses that originate in bats...................................

When a reporter asked him if he had seen "anything that gives you a high degree of confidence" that the coronavirus originated in this lab, Trump said: "Yes I have," but added he's "not allowed to tell" anyone about the intelligence.....................

Sen. Lindsey Graham, a South Carolina Republican, said he and his colleague Sen. Tim Scott would allow a $600 per week pandemic unemployment benefit to extend past July "over our dead bodies."
Graham and Scott appeared at an April 29 meeting for AccelerateSC, Gov. Henry McMaster's task force dedicated to reopening the state's economy during the coronavirus crisis.
The CARES Act provides three types of coronavirus-related unemployment benefits, including an additional $600 per week for people who are unemployed because of the coronavirus.
Graham and Scott said giving people increased unemployment benefits would incentivize them to stay home rather than return to work, therefore slowing South Carolina's economic recovery.

University of Delaware says it still has no plans to release Biden's Senate papers, as pressure mounts

Updated 8:44 AM ET, Fri May 1, 2020

(CNN)The university that possesses a trove of Joe Biden's Senate papers told CNN on Thursday that there are still no plans to make them public now, as pressure grows on Biden's presidential campaign to release records that some say could potentially shed light on a sexual assault allegation against the presumptive Democratic nominee, which his campaign denies.

The University of Delaware said in a statement provided to CNN that the school is still "curating the collection" and the process is not expected to end until well into 2021. And even after the curation is finished, a spokeswoman for the school told CNN, the school would not release the papers until two years after Biden retires from public life.

"The University of Delaware received the Biden Senatorial Papers as a gift from Vice President Biden. We are currently curating the collection, a process that we estimate will carry at least into the spring of 2021," spokeswoman Andrea Boyle said in the statement. "As the curating process is not complete, the papers are not yet available to the public, and we are not able to identify what documents or files can be found within the collection."

Biden said in a statement on Friday morning that his papers at the university do not contain personnel files. But, he said, personnel files from the Senate during those days would be kept at the National Archives.

"I am requesting that the Secretary of the Senate ask the Archives to identify any record of the complaint she alleges she filed and make available to the press any such document. If there was ever any such complaint, the record will be there," Biden said.
Biden said in an interview with MSNBC Friday morning that the his papers at the University of Delaware will remain sealed because they could become political "fodder" during his presidential campaign.

"The idea that they would all be made public while I was running for office can be taken out of context," Biden said. He added that the documents would cover topics like meetings with foreign heads of state.......................

Pence wears face mask during tour of General Motors plant

Source: the hill

By Brett Samuels - 04/30/20 02:04 PM EDT

Vice President Pence on Thursday donned a face mask as he toured a General Motors plant in Indiana, marking the first time he's worn a mask on camera.

It came just days after he defended his decision not to wear one in defiance of the Mayo Clinic's policy on a visit to Minnesota.

The vice president was joined by White House trade adviser Peter Navarro, Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao and Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb (R) on the trip to the GM plant. All wore masks during the tour of the facility, which has been converted to produce ventilators.

"You’re making a difference for America,” Pence told one employee, flashing a thumbs-up to others.

Joni Ernst Is Backing Down After Hiding the Names of Her Campaign Staff

Source: daily beast

The Iowa Republican’s campaign said it would no longer list only lump payments to a payroll company amid allegations that they were violating the spirit of the law.

Updated Apr. 30, 2020 5:29PM ET / Published Apr. 30, 2020 2:31PM ET

Iowa Republican Sen. Joni Ernst is running for reelection in what will likely be one of the nation’s most closely watched Senate contests this year. But her campaign has shielded a key bit of financial information from voters and the public: who she’s paying to run her re-election effort, and how much.

Through a subtle accounting maneuver, Ernst’s campaign has for months avoided reporting the names of the campaign staffers on her payroll, how many of those staffers there are, and the extent of payments they’ve received. Instead, the campaign appears to have grouped all of its employees together in large lump-sum payments to a staffing and human resources company it uses to administer its payroll.

It’s an arrangement that campaign finance experts say may have violated the spirit, and possibly the letter, of Federal Election Commission rules on the disclosure of payments to campaign staffers. The Ernst campaign disagrees, saying it fully complied with disclosure requirements, even as other Senate campaigns that employ the same payroll management firm have disclosed far more about the sums steered to their individual staffers........................

A QAnon Devotee Live-Streamed Her Trip to N.Y. to 'Take Out' Joe Biden

Jessica Prim was arrested on Wednesday with more than a dozen illegal knives.

Updated Apr. 30, 2020 2:21PM ET / Published Apr. 30, 2020 2:18PM ET

An Illinois woman inspired by pro-Trump QAnon conspiracy theory videos traveled to New York City on Wednesday with more than a dozen illegal knives and threatened to kill former Vice President Joe Biden, according to police and her own social media posts.

New York police officers arrested dancer Jessica Prim, 37, on Wednesday after she began to act strangely on a city pier. In a live video Prim posted on Facebook of her arrest. She ranted about saving children and claimed she had come to New York because of an internet conspiracy theory video about a “cabal” of pedophile Democrats.

“Have you guys heard about the kids?” a tearful Prim said as she was arrested. “OK, I’m not lying.”

Shortly before her arrest, Prim posted on Facebook that Hillary Clinton and Biden “need to be taken out.”

“Hillary Clinton and her assistant, Joe Biden and Tony Podesta need to be taken out in the name of Babylon!” Prim wrote. “I can’t be set free without them gone. Wake me up!!!!!”

At another point during her arrest, Prim said she believed Donald Trump was talking to her directly during his coronavirus press conferences. Prim is facing more than a dozen counts of criminal possession of a weapon over the knives, as well as a marijuana possession charge, according to the New York Daily News.........................................

Biden to join MSNBC's 'Morning Joe' to discuss Reade sexual assault allegations

Source: the hill

By Joe Concha - 04/30/20 04:51 PM EDT

Former Vice President Joe Biden will appear on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" on Friday morning, where for the first time he will address allegations from a former staffer named Tara Reade who says he sexually assaulted her in 1993.

"Morning Joe" booker Michael Del Moro said the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee would be responding to the allegations during an appearance on the show.

The appearance from his home studio in Wilmington, Del., would allow Biden to deal with the issue in what could be a more favorable setting given the criticisms the shows hosts have regularly launched against President Trump. ..........

Trump is ‘increasingly unnerved’ because his own campaign knows he’s losing to Joe Biden: CNN reporter

Published 9 hours ago on April 30, 2020

President Donald Trump has been flying off the handle recently because officials from his own campaign have warned him that he’s currently losing the 2020 presidential election.

CNN reporter Jeremy Diamond told host John Berman on Thursday that Trump is raging against his own officials after they showed him dire polling data from swing states in the last week.

“President Trump is growing increasingly unnerved about his prospect for re-election, particularly in the last week as he’s gotten updates from campaign and RNC officials showing he’s losing in key battleground states to the former vice president, Joe Biden,” Diamond explained.

Diamond also said that campaign officials have had difficulty getting Trump to believe he’s in peril because he flat-out refuses to believe the polls.

The COVID-19 crisis in Wisconsin food processing plants continues to intensify, with more than 100 workers at a Darien facility testing positive for the virus and an employee at a Pleasant Prairie plant dying from the illness.

The Pleasant Prairie employee, according to medical examiner records, died April 15. When the Journal Sentinel posed questions Monday to the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration regarding the death, the agency said it would open an investigation and conduct an on-site inspection.

OSHA officials say they are now investigating seven Wisconsin food processing plants over virus-related concerns. The agency had been saying for weeks that it wouldn’t crack down on businesses that didn’t abide by COVID-19 safety guidelines.

Workers and advocates say that at some plants, employees have been asked to work closely together without protection or to report to work even if they showed COVID-19 symptoms.

It's unclear how many meatpacking and food processing workers in Wisconsin have been infected. Wisconsin Department of Health Services spokeswoman Jennifer Miller said the agency did not have the number of essential workers infected readily available.
Officials won't release number of infected workers
