A man was shot to death by the handmade device he made to protect his home

Source: cnn

By the numbers: Gun deaths in America

(CNN)A Maine man was killed by a device he made for the front door of his home, police say.

Ronald Cyr, 65, called 911 on the evening of Thanksgiving Day and reported he had been shot, the Van Buren Police Department said.
When officers arrived, they discovered a device on the front door of the man's home that was designed to fire a handgun if anyone attempted to enter, the department said.

Police found other unknown devices around the house and contacted the state's bomb squad.

After an hours-long investigation, authorities determined Cyr -- who later succumbed to his injuries --- was hit after an "unintentional discharge of one of his homemade devices," the department said. .....................................

Trump's latest defense is that impeachment hearings should not occur while he's out of town

The clown Trump is a laugh. Since when does he care about NATO except to defund it and mock it and disrupt it.

Trump’s latest defense is that impeachment hearings should not occur while he’s out of town

Published 14 hours ago on November 30, 2019

While on vacation at Mar-a-Lago, President Donald Trump attacked Democrats for the impeachment inquiry into his solicitation of foreign election assistance.

“I will be representing our Country in London at NATO, while the Democrats are holding the most ridiculous Impeachment hearings in history,” Trump argued

“Read the Transcripts, NOTHING was done or said wrong,” Trump argued, despite the fact the transcript revealed him soliciting foreign election assistance in violation of federal law.

The scheme was also confessed on national TV by White House acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney and Trump’s defense attorney, Rudy Giuliani.

Trump at war with Pentagon after meddling in Gallagher case and turning it into a ‘national clown show’: report

Published 1 min ago on December 1, 2019

................
...............................

..................The Times reports that, “The president’s handling of the case has distressed active-duty and retired officers and the civilians who work closely with them. Mr. Trump’s intervention, they said, emboldens war criminals and erodes the order of a professional military.”

According to Peter Feaver, a military specialist who served under former President George W. Bush, Trump is sticking his nose in internal Pentagon affairs best left to those who know what they are doing...............................

The Times notes, “As a result, the president finds himself more removed than ever from a disenchanted military command, adding the armed forces to the institutions under his authority that he has feuded with, along with the intelligence community, law enforcement agencies and diplomatic corps.”

Speaking with the Times, Chris Shumake, a former sniper who served with Gallagher, Trump has turned the administration of justice into a national spectacle that is hurting the military.

“It’s blown up bigger than any of us could have ever expected, and turned into a national clown show that put a bad light on the teams,” Mr. Shumakeexplained. “He’s trying to show he has the troops’ backs, but he’s saying he doesn’t trust any of the troops or their leaders to make the right decisions.”.................................................

Trump's Ceasefire Talk is News to Afghan Government, Taliban

Source: dailybeast

FIRST THEY’D HEARD OF IT

Published Nov. 30, 2019 9:25AM ET

President Trump’s assertion that the Taliban is “ready” and “eager” for a ceasefire is likely just wishful thinking, according to the Washington Post. The president made the claims during a surprise Thanksgiving visit to troops in Afghanistan who are on the front lines of an 18-year-old war spurred by the September 11 terror attacks. Trump told troops that the Taliban “wants to make a deal” even though Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and Taliban negotiators said that no such discussion has taken place. “They didn’t want to do a cease-fire, but now they do want to do a cease-fire,” Trump told the troops. “It will probably work out that way... We’ve made tremendous progress.” Talks with the Taliban have only recently resumed after a September meeting in the U.S. between negotiators was cancelled in haste.

What Is 'Failson' Culture? Look No Further Than the Family Trump for the Answer

What Is ‘Failson’ Culture? Look No Further Than the Family Trump for the Answer

IT NEVER ENDS

A “failson” is a son of wealth and privilege who is equal parts incompetence, stupidity, and arrogance. Sound like anybody you know?
Molly Jong-Fast Published Nov. 30, 2019 4:58AM ET

Donald Trump, Jr. cruised into the Thanksgiving weekend on the heels of an enormous literary triumph. His opus Triggered had spent two solid weeks on the top of The New York Times non-fiction best seller list. Junior’s run ended this week when he was knocked off by A Warning. But despite this displacement, Triggered represents a triumph for the young scribe, who has now accomplished something on his own. His father’s namesake is, finally, not a failson.

What’s a failson (pronounced exactly like it looks, just a combination of “fail” and “son”)? He is an upper- (or upper-middle) class incompetent who is protected by familial wealth from the consequences of his actions. The term seems to have been coined by one Will Menaker of the podcast Chapo Trap House, as documented in The New Yorker in this 2016 article.

One is not born a failson. Nor does one simply inherit the status of failson. No—failson status is earned through a display of equal parts incompetence, stupidity, and arrogance. And until his book, no person in America—or maybe even the world, so bursting at the seams with louche heirs and dissolute royals with no throne to sit their pampered arses on—illustrated all the facets of a failson better than Junior..............................

Anonymous official's book replaces Trump Jr's 'fake No 1' on bestseller list

A Warning knocks Triggered from atop the New York Times nonfiction list amid reports Republicans attempted to boost sales

Donald Trump Jr has not seen every event on his book tour go smoothly but he has had the eager support of the Republican party in driving sales of Triggered: How the Left Thrives on Hate and Wants to Silence Us.

He has, however, lost top spot on the New York Times nonfiction bestseller list to A Warning, the book by an anonymous Trump official which presents Trump Jr’s father, the president, as a menace to the republic itself.

Tony Schwartz, the author who ghosted Donald Trump’s own bestseller The Art of the Deal and has become a stringent Trump critic, greeted the news on Twitter.

“Such poetic justice,” he wrote. “A Warning by Anonymous replaces Donald Trump Jr’s fake #1 book from atop the NYTimes bestseller list.”

................................................

The Times said “at least nine Republican organizations, GOP candidates or advocacy groups are selling Triggered or promoting Mr Trump’s book tour, according to emails obtained … interviews and disclosures filed with the Federal Election Commission (FEC)”.

Among groups identified as buying Trump Jr’s book in bulk were the National Republican Campaign Committee, the National Republican Senatorial Committee, the Republican National Committee (RNC), Citizens United and Turning Point USA.........................................

Who's triggered now? Seven times Donald Trump Jr out-snowflaked the left

The president’s son walked out of his own event on Sunday. It’s not the first time he’s shown some sensitivity

This weekend, during a launch for his book Triggered: How The Left Thrives on Hate and Wants to Silence Us, Donald Trump Jr was, well, triggered.

His thesis is that leftwingers can’t handle differences in opinion. Because of that, he argues they routinely engage in a number of silencing techniques – such as no-platforming – to discourage dissenting voices.

But it was his own supporters who pushed back against him on Sunday, when they shouted at him for refusing to engage in a Q&A during an event in Los Angeles to support his book launch. Trump Jr reportedly tried to argue that he didn’t want to take questions because the left might distort his words online, which sounds a lot like not being up for open discourse.

When the crowd become loud enough to drown him out, he stormed off stage. How’s that for being thin-skinned?

As it turns out, Don Jr is actually incredibly easily triggered himself. Let us count the ways: ..................

He defended the Confederate flag and insulted immigrants. Now he’s an SC judge.

When South Carolina lawmakers confirmed a batch of new magistrates this year, one nominee stood out from the pack: Mike Pitts.

The former state House member had made a name for himself in Columbia as a staunch defender of the Confederate flag, and on Facebook he has penned anti-immigration screeds and used racially charged language. In May, for example, he posted a photo of New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker, an African American Democrat running for president. His caption: “Cory Booker alway [sic] looks like he just hit crack real hard.”

None of this, however, prompted any discussion in June, when the state Senate confirmed Pitts along with 33 other nominees for the lower courts.

Unlike South Carolina’s felony and appellate court judges, magistrates are not subjected to legislative hearings before lawmakers sign off on their appointments. In fact, there’s rarely any public debate at all. Nominations typically sail through the upper chamber with a single voice vote.

Editorial: SC senators won’t let us fix magistrate system. But here’s how to improve it

You’d be hard-pressed to find a larger concentration of ethically challenged and incompetent judges than in South Carolina’s magistrate courts.

Any court system has some ethically challenged judges. And even ethical judges sometimes misapply the law.

But as an investigation by The Post and Courier’s Joseph Cranney and Pro Publica reveals, you’d be hard-pressed to find a larger concentration of ethically challenged and incompetent judges than in South Carolina’s magistrate courts.

These SC judges can have less training than barbers but still decide thousands of cases each year

These SC judges can have less training than barbers but still decide thousands of cases each year

In the magistrate courts of South Carolina, citizens often must fend for themselves before judges lacking formal training in the law and whose errors can result in punishing consequences for defendants.

The system, Mr. Cranney reports, is “unlike any other in the country, and one that has provided fertile ground for incompetence, corruption and other abuse.” That’s because of a combination of laws and traditions that state legislators refuse to change.

Higher-court judges must pass the Bar, demonstrate their knowledge of the law and clear ethical checks; magistrates essentially have to have a pulse — and the right relationship with the local senator. Because appointment is all about politics.........................................
