Inkfreak's JournalAnyone here familiar with pistol permits in NY?
Specifically in Upstate. Here's the situation... I'm looking to get a new job at a nuke plant as a guard. And I'll need a pistol permit to do so. I grabbed the application for my pistol permit and have my references. It seems pretty straightforward except where it wants me to check a box for the following:
1-carry concealed
2-possess on premises
3-possess/carry during employment
I'm assuming if I want it just for the job, I choose 3. But what if I'd like to get my carry concealed? If I check that box and it gets denied, do I not get a permit at all? And if I choose option 3 do I have to go through this process again someday if I do want to pursue the option of concealed carry?
And I don't have the job yet. I have yet to apply, though I've gotten assurances it's very likely, I have a clean record & am a vet. They ask why it's required, so do I just write down its for future employment?
Needless to say, just getting the permit is what's important. And I'm ok with just that. There's a bunch of Qs and I'd be thankful for any advice. I'll prolly head to the county clerks office to ask them the same questions but I'm outta town currently so I thought I'd ask here.

A question for dog owners. UPDATED.
My wife and I have just moved into our New home and we have a large fenced in yard for our three dogs. Previously we did not have a fenced in yard and whenever we took the dogs out one of us just had to stay out with them to watch because we are rather close to the road. My question is, how long is it okay to leave your dog outside in the winter? We live in upstate New York, and I'm not talking about leaving them out for hours at a time. We love our dogs with us and they stay inside for a lot of the time except when they get exercise. But I'm just worried that if my dogs are hanging outside for little too long they'll get cold. They love playing outside and will stay as long as I let them, sounds silly but I'm generally curious what do you all think. For the last couple days I've been letting them out for about 30 to 45 minutes at a time, it hasn't been particularly cold and there isn't really any snow on the ground. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated thanks a lot!

Thanks for the advice, folks! It seems I may have been premature in my concern. These dogs are in heaven, lol. They're very happy outside and it's been very relaxing playing fetch with them and not having to keep a sharp eye out for the occasional biker or runner we used to get.
And frankly the weather has been awesome! No white Christmas this year, we're looking at 40 degrees! Yay!!! Thanks again for offering up advice!
Fist Bumps Relay 90% Less Germs Than Handshakes
The study in the American Journal of Infection Control found that fist bumps, where two people briefly press the top of their closed fists together, transferred about 90 percent less bacteria than handshakes.
"People rarely think about the health implications of shaking hands," Dave Whitworth, a biologist at Aberystwyth University in the United Kingdom who co-authored the study, said in a statement.
"If the general public could be encouraged to fist bump, there is genuine potential to reduce the spread of infectious diseases," he said.

Standard procedure for me at work. I go in a lot of prisons & mental health facilities. Inmates & "clients" are always trying to shake hands. I usually carry tools or paperwork in my hands so I can't. But when I get caught off guard, I always throw up the fist.
Meeting people in casual circumstances is a little different. I tend to just shake hands to avoid awkwardness. I do hate cold, clammy hands though. Gross.

But thanks to 16-year-old Nick Rubin, keeping track of just how much politicians have sold out has become a lot easier. He created Greenhouse, a new browser plug-in that operates under the motto "Some are red. Some are blue. All are green." The plugin aims "to shine light on a social and industrial disease of today: the undue influence of money in our Congress." It sounds like a bit of a lofty aim for an app, but it's actually pretty simple and effective—it provides a breakdown of a politician’s campaign contributions when that politician's name comes up in an article. It is currently available for Chrome, Firefox, and Safari and is completely free. As you can imagine, reading about how your member of Congress voted in a recent health bill becomes all the more enlightening if you know how much money the health industry showered him in at the last election.
I spoke to Nick Rubin about the plugin, politics, and what he calls the "money stories" behind what you read in the news.
It works by highlighting the name of any member of Congress on any website, and when you hover over these names a little box appears that shows detailed contribution information with amounts and where those amounts have come from. It’s basically a list of the top-ten industries from which they receive their money. My goal was to create something that promotes transparency. It would be great if people used it on sites where they’re reading about politics every day. For example, if you’re reading a piece on Congress votes for energy policy, you might see that a sponsor has received hundreds of thousands of dollars from the oil and gas industry. I like to say that Greenhouse allows people to see the money story behind the news story.
I just want it to educate people because that’s really the first step toward a solution. That’s exactly why I designed Greenhouse with simplicity in mind, so that everyone—even kids—are able to understand it. In terms of whether Greenhouse will solve this issue—well, education is the first step. I really do believe that increased transparency will help fix the problem. Easy access to data empowers voters to make better decisions. Once people are informed, they will reject elected officials who are motived by money instead of principles. But for now, I’ll leave the solution to others.

The team's gonna build up around their teammate, and it's going to galvanize the team. Everyone's talking about how this could disrupt the locker room. My Cat Was Run Over. And Then Came Home.
About 10:30pm last night I saw a car stopped about 150 or so yards from our house. It was curious because we live in a rather rural area. But it was kind of near my neighbor so I figured it was him. And mentioned it to my wife. About 2 minutes later she received a text from her cousin saying that she just hit a cat. It looked like ours.
A quick back story: 8 years ago a big tabby ran up to us as we exited the bar late one night. He was friendly and jumped right in our car! He looked rather scruffy so we took him home. I was adamant we would look for his owner. Well, he didn't have one. A neighbor to the bar told us he's been out living in the area for about 2 years. A hefty vet bill later, we had Butters! Or Mr. Butters as he became known. An outside cat except in winter. Loud purring, affectionate head-butting and a lil attitude if not listened to became a welcome addition.
I didn't want to go look. I felt it couldn't be him hit by the car. This cat has some incredible instincts. Going from the city streets to rural roads seemed like an easy transition. He always had an eye on a car if he heard/saw one. We trudged over to the car and there he was. Wet and lifeless. I thanked my wife's cousin for telling us (no blame. She was really upset) and wrapped my boy up and brought him home.
I placed him in the shed and figured I'd bury him in the morning. But I needed to distract myself. So I began digging. When finished I held my boy one last time and buried him. My wife and I sat inside and cried and expressed our shock. I told my wife that I couldn't believe it. I wanted to go to the door and jiggle the handle. It was his "dinner bell", if he was nearby he would come running. I really couldn't believe it.
About 30 minutes later I got up to turn off our porch lights and as I looked out the door I muttered "poor Butters, I loved that cat.". And right fucking then he walked up to my fucking door!!!!!! I buried his dang doppelgänger!!! Folks, I shit you not, I buried a cat that was not mine! We started freaking out. Can't describe it any better. Mr. Butters is alive.
I'll have to check the area today to find the buried cats owner. We don't have a lot of close neighbors and I've never seen another orange tabby like ours in this area. Our closest neighbor does have quite a few ferrel cats on his property. He lets them live in an old trailer. But they're all kinda small and scruffy. This cat was bigger and healthy looking.
So I'm rejoicing but saddened by this poor cat. And it's possible owners not knowing. I'm gonna do my best to find them. But my boy is back! And I can't stop petting him. Thanks for reading my crazy story. 
Oh and this is Mr. Butters. Sleeping wherever the hell he wants. Cause he rules.

Christian rocker pleads guilty to trying to hire hit man to kill wife
"VISTA -- Tim Lambesis, lead singer for the Christian-themed band As I Lay Dying, pleaded guilty Tuesday to trying to hire a hit man to kill his estranged wife, who had filed for divorce.
Lambesis, 32, a resident of Carlsbad, faces a possible nine years in prison for soliciting a murder when sentenced May 2, according to prosecutors in the Superior Court case."

Workers Vote Against Union In Oswego, NY
Scriba (WSYR-TV) - Workers at Oswego County’s largest employer voted down a proposal to form a union. Novelis says workers in Scriba voted down the proposal during a two-day election conducted by the National Labor Relations Board.

Some employees say that the company has raised healthcare costs, cut overtime pay, and cut benefits at non-union facilities. The plant manager at Novelis says that to help absorb the higher costs, workers got a 5 percent raise and a $2,500 bonus.
