It looks like the OC is Ground Zero for control of the US House and it might be a good idea to make sure the local Democratic organization has the funds to do the legwork needed for voter contact and updating voter lists. Before I consider donating and urging others to do donate, does anyone know them well enough to tell if they know what they are doing?

Court rules children facing deportation have no right to court-appointed lawyer

Immigrant children who enter the country illegally with their parents have no right to a government-appointed lawyer in court, an appeals court ruled Monday.

The ruling came in the case of a Honduran boy who arrived in the United States in 2014 at age 13 and was denied a stay of deportation.

The boy came to the U.S. with his mother and appeared in immigration court without a lawyer.

While criminal defendants, citizens or not, have the right to government-funded legal representation, that right doesn't extend to immigration cases.

In the ruling, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals said Congress had not legislated to guarantee legal representation to minors in similar cases.

OH-01: Democrats land top recruit to challenge Steve Chabot

National Democrats probably have landed a big Cincinnati recruit in their quest to take back the U.S. House this year.

Hamilton County Clerk of Courts Aftab Pureval requested donors support him if he runs for U.S. Rep. Steve Chabot’s, R-Westwood, seat in November and told them he intends to jump in the race.

“I think it’s happening,” said a person familiar with the calls Pureval has made who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

A Pureval spokeswoman declined to comment.

Pureval is a first-tier candidate for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee in Ohio’s 1st Congressional District, but unseating Chabot, who has served all but two of the last 23 years in the seat, will be a tremendous political challenge. Pureval also will have to beat two Democrats in the primary – Rabbi Robert Barr and Michele Young, who ran for the seat two years ago.
