After losing a Congressional race by 1,995 votes two years ago, Matt Doheny went back to his home in New York's 21st District to recharge. He asked long-time girlfriend Mary to marry him (she said yes, "of course&quot and announced he would re-challenge Democratic Rep. Bill Owens in 2012.

Last week, Doheny went to the National Republican Congressional Committee's Washington "candidate school" to prepare for the campaign—and ended up in the arms of campaign consultant Monica Notzon. Matt and Monica swear they're "just friends." The pictures may tell a different story.

According to the National Journal, House GOP leaders hand-selected fifteen candidates—"the strongest GOP challengers in the country"—and brought them to D.C. for two days of campaign workshops on Tuesday and Wednesday of last week. John Boehner was among the featured speakers.

Issa faces Democratic challenger in new 49th

Republican incumbent for the 49th Congressional District, Darrell Issa, and the real estate broker challenging him for his congressional seat this election cycle share the same hometown of Cleveland, Ohio. But finding similarities between their political beliefs is another story.

Democrat Jerry Tetalman has lived in Carlsbad since 1997 and plans on running a grassroots campaign against Issa. Issa is the second richest man in Congress, with his assets totaling roughly $240 million as of 2011. Even with the new district lines the party registration is 43 percent Republican and 29 percent Democrat.

Tetalman believes he has a fighting chance despite Issa’s incumbency and monetary advantage, and the GOP voter registration advantage.

“I think if you look at the richest man in Congress you have a disconnect between the average person that is working for a living who is not an investor,” Tetalman said. “I see he is really out of touch with the average person and their needs, he doesn’t represent the interest of working class people.”

Dear Republicans, only 157 days until "Etch A Sketch Day"

On September 1st the Republican convention will be over, the delegates will be safely out of Tampa and the Romney campaign will have one big shake, shake, shake and you, like us, will find out exactly why Mitt Romney is running for President and what policies he intends to put in front of the American people, especially independents, to convince them that he really had little to do with the guy that had to spend so much time in the mud with those 'crazy Republican extremists'. He was 'running for President' for goodness sake.

A funny thing happened on this thread about trying to 'divine' "Why Mitt Romney is Running for President". It got a few recs, a few replies and over 5500 views. I am really curious how many of those views were from outside of DU regulars. Seems to have hit a nerve. In fact three people with no previous experience on DU joined just to express their opinions (strangely similar) that any discussion of Mormon/Political nexus was "Psycho-historical fantasy","conspiracy stories about minority groups" and "psychobabble".

We know that there are freepers, cave dwellers, and others from the other side of the aisle who watch what is posted here pretty closely but now we have Mormon friendly supporters of Mitt Romney who have joined in watching, and are particularly interested in trying to beat down anything that appears to discredit the political motivations of certain Mormons to advance a Presidential campaign.

To the former group of freepers, cave dwellers and other conservatives who blog and watch what happens at DU we commiserate with you. You have no clearer idea what this Republican Presidential Campaign is going to be about than we do. You have even less reason to trust the man that will lead your party in the campaign and for the next 4 years than we do. What will he do to try and attract women? What will he say about DOMA? What about Afghanistan? He doesn't seem to have any real ties with the military, do you think that he might offer a radical cut to balance the budget? When faced with an Electoral College landslide what will he do for his Game Change? Maybe he will do a big sommersalt on taxes and shake everyone up by asking for a 5% surtax on the super rich.

The only thing that is certain is that the platform that he is running on now will be a disaster. So he is going to 'Etch A Sketch' it away.

September 1st 2012, "Etch A Sketch Day" the day that we all begin to find out exactly what the Republicans think that they bought actually is. Kind of like a Christmas present exchange at the office; you know how much you paid you just have no idea what you are going to get.

It’s a smart answer and a deeply conservative one.

SAN DIEGO — At Mitt Romney’s proposed California beach house, the cars will have their own separate elevator.

There’s also a planned outdoor shower and a 3,600-square foot basement — a room with more floor space than the existing home’s entire living quarters.

Those are just some of the amenities planned for the massive renovation of the Romneys’ home in the tony La Jolla neighborhood of San Diego, according to plans on file with the city.

A project this ambitious comes with another feature you don’t always find with the typical fixer-upper: its own lobbyist, hired by Romney to push the plan through the approval process.

We Cannot Repeal/We Cannot Replace

Idiocy defined. Romney in San Diego yesterday. Why San Diego? He isn't going to compete in California but his campaign (not the PAC is running out of money). They always use the most meaningless slogans. In this case they doubled down. There isn't going to be any repeal and they don't have anything to replace it with.

2) You have NOTHING to replace it with.

The Romney campaign is getting roasted in editorial cartoons almost since its inception so out pops MittFitts.com: "Toons for Romney – is a grassroots effort to support the candidacy of Governor Mitt Romney for President in 2012."

Now the site's owners state that they are an entirely 'grassroots' campaign with 'no' affiliation to the Romney campaign. The site has high expensive production value, sophisticated lay out and archeticture, elaborate RSS feeds, elaborate guest tracking, sophisticated legal advise, professional comic book artists formerly working for DC Comics and now illustrating for the LDS Church.

They purport to be 'grassroots' with no connection to the Romney campaign. All net proceeds from the site go to "are donated to the Romney for President campaign or affiliated Political Action Committees."

Right. No affilitation with the campaign.

In any case two mind numbing alternatives.

The first is that this is (98% probability) the off shoot of one of their PACs brainstorming sessions with their PR/Advertising people and they think that this kind of crappola is the kind of stuff that is going to get any traction with the American public at all.

The other is that this is (2% probability) the result of a bunch of guys from Romney's actual 'grass roots' campaign getting together.

Either possibility and the actual exeuction of the site is nauseating in either interpretation, ridiculous in their conception, profoundly idiotic in their substance, devoid of any humor at any point and if widely distributed absolutely counter productive to getting normal Americans to support their candidate.

Just how stupid do they think the American Public is?

With today's Super Gaffe "Romney is an Etch a Sketch" and "were going to take back everything we said after the nomination" and yesterday's Santorum Super Gaffe" "I don't care about the unemployment number" serious minds have to wonder whether or not the mind numbing insularity and bizzare penchant for self immolation on the campaign trail is in fact a contagious disease that has run amok among Presidential contenders.

A careful epidomological study has begun by the CDC to see who has had contact with what Republican nominees/celebrity gadflys. In order to trace the progress of the disease epidomologists are going back to the first candidate who showed full blown Palinitis, Michelle Backmann, and trace to see how this insidious disease is being spread among Republican politicians/and psuedo politician hucksters.

The strain is seen as morphing radically as different Republicans are showing different but still related symptoms: Governors McDonnell (forced ultrasound), Daniels (right to work), Scott (too many symptoms to list), Walker (public union busting) all seem to have been infected. More and more Senators and Congressman, Ryan (repeating the disastorous elimination of Medicare), Sterns (birther guy) all seem to indicate that this is a particular virulent strain of a brain reducing virus that seems to attack a Republicans ability to process normal human thoughts.

Some early attempts at screening have shown alarming results: A whopping 63% of Republican politicians tested were unaware that Ammendment 19 to the Constitution gave women the right to vote. An even larger percent, 78% were unaware that most Americans enjoyed sexual activity and relied on birth control prescriptions in order to enjoy more frequent sexual activity. Over 53% of the test group could not identify OPEC or what they did and were convinced that the President set the nation's gas prices at the daily staff meeting. Most surprising in the results were 84% of those tested stated that the Iraq war achieved "Mission Accomplished" status withing 6 months of initial hostilities, that massive stocks of WMD were found and that a war with Iran would take more or less than 6-9 months with the main obstacle for our troops trying to get the deliriously happy Iranian population to return to normal day to day activity after the first bombs started to fall on Tehran.

Leading CDC scientists said that they expected that the results of their studies should be completed around the second week of November.

We all know one or two. Some of us have inlaws like it. We have all had or known one teacher who fit the description.

Now we know that the percent of the population in the US that is completely beyond normal human emotion and completely irrational.

In a recent PPP poll they asked all the normal questions and then asked if putting your dog on the roof for a long car ride was humane and so on.
