(New York) – Amnesty International USA Executive Director Suzanne Nossel made the following comments today in response to the Justice Department’s announcement that it closed the investigation into the CIA’s torture and abuse of detainees, without bringing charges.

“The continued failure to hold accountable all of those responsible for well documented cases of torture and other abuses is now a stain on two administrations -- and itself a crime. Those responsible must be punished. The failure to do so is a striking blow against justice and human rights. The Attorney General noted that the decision to close the investigation ‘was not intended to, and does not resolve, broader questions regarding the propriety of the examined conduct.’

But when will those ‘broader questions’ be addressed? And when will the U.S. government meet its international human rights obligations to ensure accountability for torture and other crimes under international law? There must be a full and impartial investigation, prosecutions where warranted, and remedy and redress for victims. Failure to ensure accountability for torture and other crimes is itself a violation of international law."

Amnesty International is a Nobel Peace Prize-winning grassroots activist organization with more than 3 million supporters, activists and volunteers in more than 150 countries campaigning for human rights worldwide. The organization investigates and exposes abuses, educates and mobilizes the public, and works to protect people wherever justice, freedom, truth and dignity are denied.

Amy Goodman Questions Top GOP Donor David Koch: Does Concentration of Wealth Subvert Democracy?

http://www.democracynow.org/2012/8/31/amy_goodman_questions_top_gop_donor

When conservative billionaire David Koch sat down as a member of the New York delegation Thursday night on the floor of the Republican National Convention, Democracy Now! host Amy Goodman attempted to ask him one question: "Mr. Koch, do you think unchecked concentration of wealth will undermine democracy?" While Koch started to answer, the delegates and security around him stood up, one by one, creating a human wall between them. One of those who stood up was Ed Cox, chair of the Republican Party of New York and the son-in-law of President Richard Nixon. Eventually, Goodman was asked to leave due to "security issues" with keeping the walkway clear. [includes rush transcript]

The 5 Biggest Lies In Mitt Romney’s Acceptance Speech

http://www.politicususa.com/5-biggest-lies-mitt-romneys-acceptance-speech.html

1). Mitt Romney Goes Birther

What Romney Said, “Tonight that American flag is still there on the moon. And I don’t doubt for a second that Neil Armstrong’s spirit is still with us: that unique blend of optimism, humility and the utter confidence that when the world needs someone to do the really big stuff, you need an American.”

The Truth: Ah yes, what would a gathering of more than four Republicans be if somebody didn’t suggest in the most sly way that Obama is not American. Romney’s statement can also be viewed as when you need really big stuff done, you need a white man. It was subtle, but it was there. Romney was doing his best Ronald Reagan all-American impression. If Romney is Captain America, then what does that make Barack Obama?

Wow...powerful blue moon.

Wondering if tonights' RNC will "feel" it as well

That's not a prediction, although I will reiterate one from months ago about the republicans...their klown kar will become more and more "pathetic", and that word has a few angles. Tonight is part of the shift to the positive and such things result in some clinging all the worse to that which is no longer sustainable, and those who have been bad but willing to shift upwards, seeming lost.

Paul Ryan’s brazen lies: His Republican National Convention speech was stunning for its dishonesty

http://www.salon.com/2012/08/30/paul_ryans_brazen_lies/

Paul Ryan gave a feisty anti-Obama speech that will have fact-checkers working for days. His most brazen lie accused President Obama of “raiding” Medicare by taking the exact same $716 billion that Ryan and the House GOP notoriously voted to slash. It was stunning.

But that’s not all. He attacked Obama for failing to keep open a Janesville GM plant that closed under Bush in 2008. He hit him for a credit-rating downgrade that S&P essentially blamed on GOP intransigence. He claimed that all taxpayers got from the 2009 stimulus was “more debt,” when most got a tax cut (and the stimulus is known to have saved between 1.4 and 3.3 million jobs). He derided the president for walking away from the Simpson Bowles commission deficit-cutting recommendations when Ryan himself, a commission member, voted against those recommendations.

He blamed Obama for a deficit mostly created by programs he himself voted for – from two wars, tax cuts, new Medicare benefits and TARP.

CNN anchors reporting they are getting tons of emails telling them about Ryan's lies. They are even reluctantly pointing some of them out.

Let's not let a bunch of cheap jokes about Paul Ryan looking like Eddie Munster distract us

Andy Borowitz ?@BorowitzReport

Let's not let a bunch of cheap jokes about Paul Ryan looking like Eddie Munster distract us from the fact that he is a sociopath.
