just an update on Greta, my foster

She was the mama cat who raised four kittens at my house and was a skittish outside cat before that. Kittens went back and were all adopted three weeks ago. Greta went back two weeks ago and was being socialized by our wonderful volunteer cat socializers. And it worked--adopted today! Congrats, Greta and have a great life with a family of your own to love you!

Fosters graduate--and a retrospective.

The four kittens went back to the shelter on Wednesday. I expect to see them being made available for adoption by Saturday--and they are the only kittens this week, so will no doubt go fast! Mama Greta is still here with us and will go in next Wednesday. She's getting along fine and enjoying herself. I haven't seen her calling for or looking for her kittens even once. She goes where she pleases in the house and is getting along fine with my two cats--cordial, with only a little hissing on either side.

Here is a little look back to see how the kittens had grown:

Milo at two weeks:

Bye, bye, kittens! Have a nice life!

May 19, 2017

We are eight weeks old!

We are foster kittens and are getting so big! Our foster mom lets us run all over the house--but we mostly stay upstairs because we know our way around. We met her two cats, who hissed, but like to watch us play from a safe distance. Our mama wants nothing to do with the strange cats downstairs!

We can jump so high, and climb everywhere. We go into the spare bedroom down the hall where there are boxes to climb and a big window to look out of. The window in our room is too high for us and only Mama can jump up there (but we do look longingly for a way to get up there, too!) We found some dry leaves from the plant in the spare bedroom and they are great for carrying around. Everything is a game, and everything is a toy! Here are some pictures Foster Mom took this week:

Foster kittens seven weeks old

They're getting more and more rambunctious! Can jump up easily to a surface 20 inches off the ground, and climb up onto the bed and fly across it in a flash! They chase and pounce at top speed and are starting to drive their cat mama a little crazy. She still nurses them, though, and tries to give them their baths! Two weeks from today they will probably be back at the shelter getting ready to be put up for adoption.

Here's what's been going on in the kitten room this week:

Eating: all are eating wet food well, and beginning to crunch dry kibble too, if it is in their wet food dish. Some are lapping water from the dish, and some are still scared of it! This is Max.
[img][/img]Max eats his dinner by Ginny, on Flickr

Playing: they all still love their paper pile! This is Ellie playing peek a boo.
[img][/img]fullsizeoutput_9212 by Ginny, on Flickr

Growing: You can now easily see the difference between Milo, left and Max on the right. Milo has a longer muzzle and will no doubt be a big dude orange cat! Max is the same size, but his face is more round.
[img][/img]fullsizeoutput_91df by Ginny, on Flickr

Cuddling: still like to nurse on Mama Greta and she doesn't mind. She still calls them to her.
[img][/img]fullsizeoutput_91e2 by Ginny, on Flickr

Tumbling: Here is Alfie showing off his belly spots!

Climbing: Mama likes to get away to the top of the shelves and look out the window. Ellie would really like to figure out how to get up there, too! (Note: see what I had to do to the lamp plug and night light to keep them from being pulled out and/or chewed on! Duct tape to the rescue.)

Eyes: they are all in the process of turning green. Still have some blue around the edges. Alfie's remain the most blue, and the others' are greener. Maybe his eyes will be a darker shade because he's darker overall.

We are six weeks old!

Hi DU Pets group! We will be six weeks old tomorrow, so our foster mom, Ginny took some new pictures! We went to the shelter yesterday and saw the vet and got our first vaccinations and routine dewormer. We were very sleepy last night as a result, but sure made up for it today! Mama also got her tests and shots, so she's all up to date, too.

We have two cubes now, and a shredded paper pile to tumble in!

Fosters at five weeks

Five weeks old tomorrow! New things this week: they've got litter box training down pat and use it like they've been doing so for years. They have a red cube to play in now, and I brought in the kitten tower (top level only 20" off the ground) for them to practice their climbing skills on. Eating wet food, drinking water and still nursing with Mama Greta.

Fosters are four weeks old tomorrow!

A lot has happened between weeks three and four:

Box was breached! On Easter Sunday, Alfie learned how to jump out of the box. That meant it was time to open up the front flap and allow access to the rest of the room:
[img][/img]fullsizeoutput_90b1 by Ginny, on Flickr

Ears are up!
[img][/img]fullsizeoutput_90b2 by Ginny, on Flickr

Getting a bit crowded in the box, anyway! They are wrestling and tumbling with each other and learning to climb.
[img][/img]fullsizeoutput_90b8 by Ginny, on Flickr

Time to explore! They are sniffing and tasting things. I started them on wet food lessons and two are pretty good at it. They are also learning to use the litter box--we have three successful pees that I saw. Mama cat will be happy not to have that chore anymore!
[img][/img]fullsizeoutput_90dc by Ginny, on Flickr

Mama Greta has been more social: she will now walk around the room when I'm there, instead of hiding under the bed or staying in the kitten box. This morning she even came up to me for a head scratch! Amazing. She's a good mom and calls the kittens to her to nurse. When there is "kitten drama" and one is mewing for some reason, she answers with that unique mama cat language, "purrrrrup?" to tell them that she is there.

April 15, 2017

Kittens are three weeks old!

Here are highlights from their third week. Beginning to stand and get those bellies off the ground, although very wobbly. Beginning to sniff, scratch and lick their paws. Looking all around with new eyes. They can't climb out of the box yet (and their mama is glad for that) but they enjoy it when I pick them up and let them out for a while. Mama cat is getting more comfortable with me, and I can even lift her out of the box without a fight (she jumps right back in, though). They are interested in sniffing Mama's food, so that will be the next thing: in about a week they can try some. They are weighing in at about 12-13 oz.

Hi, Mama!

Max is a little more red than Milo, and he has bigger and darker stripes on his tail. And he loves to complain!

April 3, 2017

Yup, two orange boys.

The dark tabby is also a boy, and the lighter tabby/torbie is exactly like Mama and a female.

I have an orange boy (3 y/o) of my own and I agree, they are the best! He met my sister-in-law today for the first tie and put on quite a big show, looking a her upside-down and being kitten-cute, really flirty and so friendly.

I know I have posted his pic in this forum before, but here he is again:
