WOW! Regardless of where you stand on gun control-the fact remains the USA is one gun-toting country

found this exploring around the intertubes:

Regardless of where you stand on gun control, the fact remains that America is one gun-toting country. There are 89 guns for every 100 civilians, according to the 2011 Small Arms Survey. That amounts to roughly 270 million guns owned nationwide, far and away the highest gun ownership rate in the world. With less than 5 percent of the world’s population, the U.S. is home to anywhere between 35 and 50 percent of all civilian-owned guns on earth.

Myth #7: Guns make women safer.

Myth #7: Guns make women safer.

Fact-check: In 2010, nearly 6 times more women were shot by husbands, boyfriends, and ex-partners than murdered by male strangers.

• A woman's chances of being killed by her abuser increase more than 7 times if he has access to a gun.

• One study found that women in states with higher gun ownership rates were 4.9 times more likely to be murdered by a gun that women in states with lower gun ownership rates.

GOOD NEWs: Elton, the ‘Gay’ Dog, Spared the Gas Chamber

The dog was left with a rabies control shelter in Jackson, Tenn., this week “not because he’s mean or tears things up… But because his owner says he’s gay!” the group Jackson TN Euthanasia, which tries to find homes for dogs in kill-shelters, posted on its Facebook page on Wednesday.

“He hunched another male dog so his owner threw him away because he refuses to have a ‘gay’ dog!” the group wrote in a post that went viral, leading to thousands of comments online and hundreds of people calling the shelter.

One of those callers was Stephanie Fryns, a veterinary tech from Jackson, who rescued the bulldog-mix. She named him Elton.

.................

Fryns said the pooch weighed 50 pounds, and “was pretty friendly so far. He’s pretty scared of everything, which is understandable. But he loved the car ride.”

Drone Resistant Cities?

Someone is working with the thought of a drone resistant city.

Where drone pilots cannot get a view, either though aerial surveillance or through cyberspace into what goes on inside, and who is there.

fascinating stuff...

"We stop being something to be proud of when we love our guns more than we love our children"

Powerful words spoken at Newtown, Conn. hearing

............

Susan Aaron's daughter is one of the children who survived the shooting.

..............

Those who argue against tougher gun laws cite the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

Susan Aaron disagrees.

"We stop being the world's greatest country when we allow our most vulnerable citizens to be slaughtered because we might offend people by taking away their guns. We stop being something to be proud of when we love our guns more than we love our children," she said.

Freedom Hating NRA Bodyguards-Manhandle Journalists So LaPierre Couldn't Be Questioned or Filmed

NRA Takes Congress

Dana Milbank:

"When he and his colleagues stepped off the elevator in the Dirksen Senate Office Building on Wednesday morning and found TV cameras waiting in the hallway, LaPierre's bodyguards swung into action. One of them, in blatant violation of congressional rules, bumped and body-checked journalists out of the way so they couldn't film LaPierre or question him as he walked. 'You don't have jurisdiction here!' a cameraman protested as an NRA goon pushed him against a wall. After the melee, congressional officials informed the NRA officials that, in the halls of Congress, they had to follow congressional procedures -- which prohibit manhandling. This must have come as a surprise to the gun lobbyists, whose swagger seems to suggest that they are, in fact, in control of Congress.

Good news, everyone! For those of you who, like me, have been wondering when conservatives would stop making infuriatingly stupid statements about rape and guns, It just got worse. Now they're making infuriatingly stupid comments about rape and guns at the same fucking time.

Judge to US government: stop censoring 9/11 hearings

Military Judge James Pohl says government must disconnect outside feed or ability to suspend broadcast from outside his court.

Middle East Online

Censoring can go on, but not from outside courtroom

US NAVAL BASE AT GUANTANAMO BAY (Cuba) - A military judge ordered the US government Thursday to stop censoring September 11 pre-trial hearings from outside his courtroom.

Judge James Pohl said the government must "disconnect the outside feed or ability to suspend the broadcast" from outside his court.

Proceedings are heard in the press room, and in a room where human rights groups and victims’ families sit, with a 40 second delay. This is done so that a security officer sitting next to the judge can block anything deemed classified.

The ruling Thursday means censoring can go on, but it cannot be activated from outside the courtroom.

A dog is set to be put to death in Tennessee today after his owner abandoned him because he thought he was gay.

The pitbull-type hound is currently languishing in an overcrowded animal shelter in Jackson but is due to be put this afternoon down unless a new owner can be found at the last minute.

According to the owner of the shelter, the dog's master noticed him 'hunched over' another male dog, which led him to assume he was gay.
