At 10AM ET on March 30th, the US Navy’s gigantic floating hospital ship, the USNS Comfort, arrived in New York City where it has been sent to help relieve the pressure on the city’s hospitals that are overwhelmed with coronavirus patients.

The Comfort’s 1,000 beds and 12 operating rooms will largely be used for non-coronavirus patients, freeing up much-needed space at the city’s overtaxed hospitals. The ship is typically used to support military campaigns and humanitarian crises abroad, along with earthquake and hurricane relief. Most recently, it was deployed to Latin America, helping countries with inadequate health care systems. It was last stationed in New York City after the 9/11 terrorist attacks where it helped treat hundreds of first responders.

The district where the incident took place - Bareilly in northern Uttar Pradesh state - reported its first coronavirus case on Sunday.

Hundreds of thousands of migrant workers are desperate to leave cities where they are stranded without work or money as India shuts down for three weeks to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

With all transportation, such as trains and buses, suspended many are making traveling hundreds of kilometers on foot, lugging bags or clutching small bundles.

Trains and buses went out of service on Sunday with almost no notice, giving people little time to leave.

Governors and mayors across the United States are on the front lines of the pandemic sweeping throughout the nation, issuing orders to discourage public gatherings in an effort to curb the growing public health crisis.

Nevertheless, thousands of citizens have ignored these orders, choosing instead to gather on the beach or even at church services despite the highly contagious virus that's thrust the world into a global pandemic.

As a result, some local leaders are growing more and more frustrated.

One of those leaders is Walton, Kentucky Mayor Gabe Brown, who didn't mince words in reiterating warnings to Kentuckians to take the virus seriously.



Brown went on to warn that, despite accusations from President Donald Trump and his allies, he wasn't sensationalizing the threat posed by the virus.

"I didn't give you information to induce panic," Brown wrote. "I gave you information, so that you would be informed."

(ROME) — It was the biggest soccer game in Atalanta’s history and a third of Bergamo’s population made the short trip to Milan’s famed San Siro Stadium. Nearly 2,500 fans of visiting Spanish club Valencia also traveled to that Champions League match.

More than a month later, experts are pointing to the Feb. 19 game as one of the biggest reasons why Bergamo has become one of the epicenters of the coronavirus pandemic — a “biological bomb” was the way one respiratory specialist put it — and why 35% of Valencia’s team became infected. The match, which local media have dubbed “Game Zero,” was held two days before the first case of locally transmitted COVID-19 was confirmed in Italy.

“We were mid-February so we didn’t have the circumstances of what was happening,” Bergamo Mayor Giorgio Gori said this week during a live Facebook chat with the Foreign Press Association in Rome. “If it’s true what they’re saying that the virus was already circulating in Europe in January, then it’s very probable that 40,000 Bergamaschi in the stands of San Siro, all together, exchanged the virus between them. As is possible that so many Bergamaschi that night got together in houses, bars to watch the match and did the same.

“Unfortunately, we couldn’t have known. No one knew the virus was already here,” the mayor added. “It was inevitable.”

Less than a week after the game, the first cases were reported in the province of Bergamo.

America’s young people have had a rough run of it lately. Millennials—many of whom are now in the prime of their careers—came of age in a time defined by 9/11, marked by war, and then they bore some of the hardest, longest-lasting economic impacts of the 2008 financial collapse. Now, like all of us, they’re staring down the barrel of another major economic crisis—the second in their young adult lives.

Millennials have grown up navigating enormous disruption and change in our society. And still—they stepped up, across the board, to serve our country, whether by joining the military, or becoming doctors and teachers and public servants, or by volunteering in their communities and with non-profits.

Now, a new group of young people, Generation Z, is coming of age in a time of anxiety about school shootings, crushing debt, and a politics that seems unresponsive or broken beyond repair. Students from grade school to college are being denied months of important milestones and experiences. No spring semester, no championship competitions or year-end concerts, no graduations—not because of anything they did wrong, but because of the COVID-19 pandemic. And for those just entering adulthood or launching their careers, jobs, opportunities, and even dreams are being snatched away.

None of us want to be cooped up in our homes just as the weather is turning nice, just as spring break travel plans are approaching, just as the campaign for the presidency is kicking into high gear.

It is unfair—to all of us.

And it is necessary—for all of us.

The National Rifle Association is cutting salaries 20 percent and bracing for layoffs, as the coronavirus pandemic forces the nonprofit to cancel its annual meeting set for April and a wide range of upcoming fundraisers and programs, according to a memo to staffers from the nonprofit’s leadership Monday.

More than 800 people worked at the NRA in 2018, according to its latest tax filing, although that number includes part-time workers who would not be affected by the reductions. Schedules for hourly workers will be reduced from five to four days a week, the memo said.

Some top NRA officials, including chief executive Wayne LaPierre, are taking salary reductions greater than 20 percent, according to a person familiar with the cuts who was not authorized to speak publicly about them.

In 2018, compensation for top officials, including LaPierre, surged by 41 percent and legal fees more than tripled, according to the organization’s tax filing, even as the nation’s largest gun rights organization sharply reduced spending on programs central to its mission. LaPierre received a total of about $2.2 million from the NRA and related entities in 2018, including a base salary of $1.27 million, tax documents show.

LaPierre withstood calls for his resignation last year amid allegations of lavish spending on travel, clothing and legal fees. NRA officials have staunchly defended their stewardship as the Democratic attorneys general of Washington and New York investigate the tax-exempt group’s spending.

“We must address immediate financial challenges and, as importantly, plan for long-term impacts to ensure the viability of our organization during this crucial year,” LaPierre said in the memo describing the pay cuts and proposed layoffs. “Unfortunately, these changes will necessitate the elimination of certain positions on either a temporary or, in some cases, permanent basis.”
