Although the 1950s left its mark on today’s culture, much has changed since then. The time period gave us icons like Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, and Audrey Hepburn who we recognize today, but it was also a time of opposing communism and the Cold War. Meanwhile, came the baby booms, the suburban booms, and the pilot of I Love Lucy.

Old-fashioned movies and shows may give us a hint of the 50s culture, but there is another element that can be explored: magazines. Or to be more precise, a magazine article from 1958 teaching women how to snag a husband.

“In the United States today there are sixteen million women over the age of seventeen who are not married,” the article begins. “Presumably the vast majority of them would like to be.”

Over the age of seventeen. Yes, a lot has changed since the 50s. However, that does not mean there can’t be nuggets of gold in this list that might help a girl out in 2019.
The article was created by 16 authors who were instructed by the publisher to brainstorm ways lonely women could get the attention of men. The group included a marriage consultant, a song-writer, an airline stewardess, a police commissioner, a banker, a housewife, a bachelor, and a psychologist. They were told to “throw away their judgements” while writing, which might explain their more questionable suggestions.

(CNN)When a group of moderate House freshmen Democrats moved from hard no to hell yes on starting an impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump, they changed the dynamic for House Democrats, and indeed -- the course of history.

The reason they made their announcement and explained their reasoning as a group, in an op-ed in The Washington Post, is because they had already formed a bond over their national security background -- especially the five women: Elissa Slotkin of Michigan and Abigail Spanberger of Virginia, both ex-CIA officers; Chrissy Houlahan of Pennsylvania who was in the Air Force; Mikie Sherrill of New Jersey and Rep. Elaine Luria of Virginia were Naval officers.

They met on the 2018 campaign trail as first time candidates who kept bumping into each other at events with mutual donors and supporters.

When they got to talking, these five would-be congresswomen realized that they had a lot in common, despite being from different parts of the country: they all had careers in national security they were trying to parlay into elected office.
They became fast friends, and called themselves the "badasses."

"I think badasses kind of came organically from the group since we all had either served in the military or in the CIA," Houlahan said.
They are now a band of sisters who bonded while storming the unfamiliar terrain of politics.

"Being able to text folks and say, 'you know, I'm really getting hit up on this issue, how have you been handling it?' 'I'm not sure how to translate my service into something that's relatable. How do you guys do that?'" Slotkin said she frequently asked the others.
"We have a lot in common," said Spanberger. "We all were working to flip seats to be elected in places where voters may not typically vote for people like us or with our backgrounds."

There are some people who absolutely love the winter and they can’t wait to see the snowfall and get outside to play in it. Other people, however, will be frustrated with the snow and they may think that is pretty, but they would rather live someplace warmer. It seems as if animals tend to fall into the first category. Even some animals that live their lives out in the African savanna would love the opportunity to frolic in a mountain of the white stuff if it were available. Don’t believe me? You don’t need to look any further than the Oregon zoo to find out I’m telling the truth.

This video footage comes from the winter of 2017. It shows that the animals who lived at the Oregon Zoo were not about to allow a little bit of the white stuff to stop them from having a great day. It seems as if animals get very excited about living in a winter wonderland and regardless of whether you are talking about a polar bear or an elephant, it seems as if they have just as much fun playing in the snow as each other.

It happened in January 2017 when the city of Portland, Oregon saw a very big snowfall. A foot of snow fell, paralyzing the local area and causing a lot of businesses to shut down. The Oregon Zoo also had to shut its doors for a few days because of the snowstorm.

San Francisco (CNN Business)DoorDash confirmed it suffered a data breach affecting roughly 4.9 million delivery people and merchants.

In a blog post on Thursday, DoorDash said it noticed unusual activity from a third-party service provider earlier in September. After investigating the activity, it found an unauthorized third party was able to access DoorDash user data on May 4, 2019. DoorDash said it took immediate steps to block further access and improve security.

The people affected joined DoorDash on or before April 5, 2018 — people who joined after that date weren't affected, according to the blog post. The company said it will be notifying those who were.

The breach involved data such as names, email addresses, delivery addresses, order history, phone numbers and encrypted versions of passwords. In some instances, the last four digits of payment cards and bank account numbers were accessed. According to the blog post, full payment card and bank account information weren't compromised. The driver's license numbers of about 100,000 delivery people were also accessed.

In response to the breach, DoorDash said it has added more security layers to protect people's data and improved the security protocols required to gain access to this data.

DoorDash encouraged people to change their passwords, even if they weren't affected but were still concerned about the safety of their accounts.

The listing said, “For Sale: Lot of Guns,” and Serafin Lorenzo was interested.

The 53-year-old who went by Danny liked to buy expensive items and resell them for a profit, and the cache of guns he found on ARMSLIST.com offered the bargain he was looking for. There were four Glocks, a couple 9mm pistols and nine high-powered rifles. The Florida seller, a guy named Jeremy, wanted just $3,000 cash.

“Leaving the country soon,” Jeremy’s listing said. “Looking to sale all my guns as I can’t take them with me.”

Less than 24 hours after inquiring, Lorenzo and his 51-year-old wife, Deana, were on the road from Brooksfield, Fla., late on the night of April 9, 2018, to meet Jeremy at an address just off Corkscrew Road in Estero. At 10:44 p.m., Lorenzo texted: “I’m at the church.”

Minutes later, the Lorenzos were dead.

Police wouldn’t find Lorenzo and his wife in the church parking lot until the next morning. Next to Lorenzo’s body was a bill of sale for 15 firearms — and a cellphone that would send the FBI down a wild path stretching halfway around the world leading to the alleged perpetrators.

Starting with little more than the online gun listing and the texts to Lorenzo from a Walmart burner phone, authorities say they learned the gunmen were two ex-Army soldiers bent on joining right-wing paramilitary groups involved in armed conflicts worldwide. The gun listing was true in one respect: They were leaving the country — to go to Venezuela to fight the government with the resistance, prosecutors say. The guns were coming with them. They allegedly just wanted the Lorenzos’ $3,000 to fund the journey.

In a flash, large parts of the Washington region are now officially in a drought, thanks to persistent heat and the sudden onset of dry conditions.

The U.S. government’s drought monitor, released Thursday, placed the entire region in either its abnormally dry or moderate drought categories.

The drought has seemingly come out of nowhere. As recently as early August, it wasn’t on anyone’s radar, due to how soggy it had been in months prior.

The drought was set up by a simmering summer, the seventh-hottest on record, which turned progressively drier. Although plentiful rains accompanied June and early July, they abruptly shut off thereafter.

September has delivered historically little rain, while temperatures most days (22 of 26) have soared into the summerlike 80s and 90s. Washington’s average temperature has resembled a typical September in Charleston, S.C.

The unusually hot and dry conditions, which work hand in hand, stand to continue for at least another week before our first real taste of fall.

New York (CNN Business)A crucial corner of Wall Street suddenly got very sick last week. The Federal Reserve responded with its favorite medicine: injecting markets with tens of billions of dollars of cash each day.

That emergency action from the New York Fed appears to have done the trick. The severe stress that emerged in overnight lending markets has largely faded. After spiking last week, borrowing rates have mostly gotten back in line.

But the cash crunch has only subsided because of all that free money being pumped in by the Fed. Without emergency cash injections, stress would probably return. Although the NY Fed's rescue is working, it hasn't fixed the underlying problem.
"It's like a painkiller. It works, but you're never really dealing with why the market is broken in the first place," said James Bianco, president of Bianco Research. "You're just medicating the market, you're not figuring out why the pain exists."

That pain could come back as the third quarter winds to an end next week. Liquidity normally dries up at quarter-end as banks pull back. And these aren't normal times.
"There is still a lot of caution and nervousness amongst many traders and clients," said Mark Cabana, rates strategist at Bank of America Merrill Lynch. "Quarter-end is a test."

Broken plumbing

Normally, Wall Street pays very little attention to the overnight lending markets. But that's not because they don't matter. Overnight lending markets are like the plumbing of US capital markets. They allow banks, hedge funds and other financial institutions to quickly and cheaply borrow money for short periods of time.

Investors were surprised to learn last week that the plumbing is broken. The rate on overnight repurchase, or repo, agreements surged to 5% on September 16. That's more than twice the target range for short-term borrowing set by the Federal Reserve.

(CNN)For days, Utah Sen. Mitt Romney had been a lone Republican voice expressing concern about President Donald Trump's July phone call with Volodymyr Zelensky in which Trump asked Ukraine's President to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden and his family.

Romney came to Washington promising to speak out against the President when the time called for it. Days ago, he became the first prominent elected Republican to convey his dismay about Trump asking Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to dig up dirt on Biden, one of Trump's political rivals for the White House, and Biden's son at a time when Trump was withholding aid to Ukraine.
There is no evidence of wrongdoing by either Joe Biden or Hunter Biden.

There were some signs on Wednesday evening that other Republican voices, including on GOP senator who had read the whisteblower complaint in a secure setting, that Romney may no longer be alone in his concerns.

Romney stood his ground on Wednesday after reading the call summary of the discussion between Trump and Zelensky.
"My reaction was the same as (the one) I had a few days ago, which is -- this remains deeply troubling," Romney said during an interview at The Atlantic Festival on Wednesday. "We'll see where it leads, but the first reaction is troubling."
