Expanding the Supreme Court...

It can be done by Congress, and very simply. Just pass a law setting the number of Justices by three, or five, or 99. President Biden signs it and starts appointing.

FDR's problem was style, not substance. The pubic wasn't yet into his Depression solutions, and was OK with every one of the early attempts being ruled unconstitutional. when he tried to expand the court.

The Judicial Procedures Reform Bill of 1937 aimed to appoint 6 new justices for every justice over 70 years 6 months of age who had been on the court for 10 years. It was not well received, and I don't think it even made it to a vote.

That was then.

I have no idea what would happen now, but I suspect it would have an easier time.

Just turned on MSNBC to Trump saying he's the greatest thing for Puerto Rico...

when asked why it took so long to set up an aid package "It was just so complicated to do" and of course it had absolutely nothing to do with being weeks from the election and all those Puerto Ricans in Florida. Bronx Puerto Ricans don't count, of course, since he's not winning NY anyway.

And there are plans to make PR a center for drug manufacturing-- he no doubt does not know that it has been a center for drug manufacturing for years. Or assumes we don't know.

History will not be kind to him-- I just hope we aren't kind to him in November. I want his ass beaten so badly there's not nearly enough orange dye on the planet to cover the scars.

Makes me crazy-- arguing over school openings. "Kids learn better in school". Well, duh...

Of course they do, but they don't learn shit if they are in the hospital. Or dead.

I thought that a fundamental, absolute rule with kids is to maintain their health and safety. Do no harm. Aren't we thinking insanely about giving guns to teachers to defend against school shooters? How about some sane thinking about Covid and the position of school nurses. (We do still have school nurses, don't we?)

So what if football or basketball season is cancelled. Yeah, the kids' 1% shot at a scholarship may be killed. But that's better than the kid being killed, isn't it?

Many parents, especially single ones, have to deal with what to do with young kids at home. Are we as this newly "Made Great" nation incapable of coming up with an answer for this? We just threw about a trillion bucks away with no accounting-- how about actually planning what to do with that kind of money?

Makes me sick.

Drove down the road a ways, maybe 20 miles, and saw lots of Zeldin signs- he's

the tRump kissing representative for NY1, Eastern Long Island. Lots of signs for Jodi Giglio, Republican Riverhead council member running for state office. These are expected around here, although many races are tight and Dems do get elected. Often.

What I didn't expect, though, is NOT ONE Trump sign. The local R committees are going all out for down ballot races, but are leaving Trump to hang by himself.

Curioser and curioser

There will be a 70 mile MAGA-Gras parade on Long Island this Sunday...

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/maga-gras-trump-parade-heads-to-north-fork-silent-no-more/ar-BB194rvX

We already had one of these, and some boating bullshit, but this one should be interesting. If you know Long Island, you know now is prime pumpkin-picking time and the traffic jams are legendary.

So, these assholes are starting off in Northport, kinda in the middle of the North Shore, and driving about 40 miles to Riverhead, where they will amass in the empty old K-Mart parking lot. Then, they take off for the 30 or so miles to Greenport, where there is never any parking and crowds are bad enough.

I doubt any of them will at least spend a couple of bucks in the pumpkin patches or bakeries on the way. There are some excellent breweries, wineries, and at least one guy who makes some really smooth bourbon in his back yard, but I really, really don't want them drunk, too. Stupid is bad enough.

Win or lose, what's stopping the House from opening new impeachment hearings on 11/4...

And although some would consider it a waste of time, isn't wasting time what Congress does best?

And, they could include a lot of cabinet positions in the mix. Let Trump and his resident crooks go out with a whimper.

Important differences between us and Weimar Germany...

Germany was much harder hit by the Depression than we were. They also were hit with massive inflation, and a large number of their most productive males were killed or disabled in WWI. The demands made on Germany by the Versailles treaty were seen as punitive; punishing Germany for the War to End All Wars.

That, combined with a relatively short history of democracy and the fear of the Soviets on their eastern border made for strange bedfellows in the German elections.

There are always some of either gender who will become disciples, but there are also those who analyze the options and go for the "least bad" choice-- weak and ineffective democrats, Soviets on the border, or Nazis who just might put people back to work. Few had much of an idea that Hitler would really start another war, or death camps. The German bankers and industrialists let it be known that they believed they could control him once in office.

We aren't in that much trouble yet, and I still have hope only a small portion of the population falls for his bullshit.

It doesn't stop a lot of people, unfortunately.

Jillian Michaels is on CNN saying she got Covid from a friend who was in a studio group where...

everyone tested negative.

Turns out there were 5 false negatives, so the friend got it and passed it on.

You can't be too safe!

Well, he does have a point-- the Senate is now useless because of a few thousand people in...

Kentucky got Frogface elected.

Those few thousands added to the thousands of others who gave us a Republican majority are the problem.

The House had this problem years ago and stripped the Speaker of a lot of power, so the realistic(?) answer is to strip the Senate majority leader of much of his power.

There is a reason why Montana or Rhode Island should have the same number of Senators as California (although it's not as good a reason as it was in 1789 and might possibly be revised) but this does give the less populated states excessive power. When an intransigent majority leader uses this to retard government, it is close to criminal.

Should we win the Senate this election, let's make it a priority that the majority leader cannot use his power to hold judges from votes, legislation from being debated, and other anti-democratic activities.
