200 Syrians, Afghans clash in German refugee centre riot
Source: France24/AFP
HAMBURG (AFP) -
Some 200 Syrian and Afghan refugees clashed in a crowded German refugee centre in Hamburg overnight, leaving several people injured in the third such riot this week, police said Thursday.
Fifty police were called in to contain the mass brawl, which broke out in an argument in a shower block, local newspaper the Morgenpost reported.
The two groups attacked each other with iron bars and furniture and by hurling rocks, reported the daily and DPA news agency, citing emergency personnel in the northern river port city.
Police said several people were wounded, and several arrested, without providing figures. Germany is Europe's top destination for people fleeing war and misery from conflict zones and poverty-stricken countries and expects up to one million newcomers this year.

The Donald Trump - Roger Stone show: Birth Harder
Every time Donald Trump steps in another pile of crazy racist conspiracy dogshit, the sane-and-happy demographic throws up its hands and asks, Does he really believe what hes saying? He cant be serious!
The answer is that it depends what you mean by serious. If youre trying to get inside his mind like an armchair Freud, then good luck with that. But if you mean politically serious then its easier to answer.
Yes is the answer to that trick question, by the waybecause Trump is an opportunist. And Islamophobia, Mexican- bashing and conspiracy-mongering are all yuuuge underexploited opportunities in the Republican primaries.
All this came up in a conversation I had recently with an old friend of mine who asked me what role Trumps longtime partner-in-political-crime Roger Stone played in 2011, when Trump came out of nowhere to lead the Birther movement. Its a good question to ask, because until Trumps late conversion to Birtherism, he was mostly known as a kind of liberal Republican jerk, rather than a fringe-right Republican jerk.
As it turns out, a look back at the 2011 record shows that Trumps lobbyist/political adviser/dirty trickster, Roger Stone, was all over The Donalds Birther conversion. Which shouldnt be a surprise.

The president of Ecuador, Rafael Correa, used millions of dollars from his countrys intelligence budget to hire a foreign company to remove a documentary and other information critical of him or his wife from the internet, leaked documents show.
The records, seen by BuzzFeed News, show that at least one contract, for just under $4.7 million, was signed with a Mexican company that then successfully removed material from YouTube, Facebook, Vimeo, and Dailymotion. Videos removed by the company, which filed weekly reports on successful deletions, included a critical documentary by filmmaker Santiago Villa, an electoral broadcast from a rival accusing Correa of behaving like a dictator, a video from a former aide to Correas wife alleging persecution, and a report of a jailbreak from Ecuadors highest-security prison.
The new information adds to mounting international concern about censorship and press freedom under Correa. It also raises questions as to whether the Ecuadorian intelligence agencys use of contractors to monitor and remove criticisms violates free expression and privacy protections in the countrys constitution. Earlier this month the last remaining free expression charity in Ecuador was ordered by the government to close down, despite recording more than 600 attacks against journalists in four years. Amnesty International at the time accused Correa, who has led Ecuador since 2007, of restricting core human rights of freedoms of assembly, association and expression in Ecuador.
The country, which has provided asylum in its London embassy to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange since 2012, has also been criticised for its surveillance practices, including a bulk system to intercept and potentially modify text messages.

Race Is Always the Issue
Every conversation about resources in the United States is also about race and racism. Like parents choosing a neighborhood for its good schools, Americans talk about prison and crime as a means of discussing race and racism in polite company.
One neednt hate Hispanics to choose a school system with no Hispanics. One need not say that black people are violent apes to call the police when an injured human being who happens to be black knocks on your door for help. Freedomfrom being stopped and frisked; from predatory criminal justice fines; from cellsis arguably the resource from which every other resource flows: education, marriage, income, wealth, happiness, actualization. In The Black Family in the Age of Mass Incarceration, Ta-Nehisi Coates offers a decoder ring for the language of criminality, revealing that it rests on the idea that America can only be great so long as America is fundamentally white.

The articulation of Americas greatness is rarely as strong as when the country is preparing to elect its next leader. If nothing else, the political class generates tons of text and ideas for ordinary readers to parse. Coates parses the ideology of white racism in crime policy and rhetoric from the Fugitive Slave Clause through Richard Nixon, Bill Clinton and on to Bernie Sanders. The occasion is the 50th anniversary of Daniel Patrick Moynihans report, The Negro Family: The Case for National Action.
During my doctoral training, Moynihan was offered as a cautionary tale to young academics. Moynihan, they said, dared to tell the truth about the culture of poverty in black communities. As a result, the liberal elite and angry black-activist oligarchy ran him out of societys good graces, if not exactly out of town. We were warned against dabbling in social prescriptions: Look what they did to Moynihan!
