They made stuff I've bought FOR YEARS. BEATLES music, for one.

The entire "British Invasion" in rock music in the '60s, along with Yardley of London cosmetics (I bought nothing BUT their eye makeup for years!), and Mary Quant and Jean Shrimpton who practically LIVED on American magazine covers for years, and Twiggy. All losers nobody ever heard of or was interested in, 'eh? Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen and Stella McCartney, Burberry UK, Philip Treacy and those crazy much-talked-about hats. John Galliano.

Then, too, the MG (my first car, bought used and loved for years), Jaguar, Rolls Royce - the car AND the engines that power huge machinery and aircraft, Austins, the Mini-Coopers, Land Rovers, the Lotus, and more, and let's not forget the Aston Martin.

Which brings us to the arts. How 'bout the guy who drove those Aston Martins - James Bond. Gee, that was a nothing dead-end brand that nobody was interested in buying, wasn't it? The BBC and all those dramas and comedies. Mr. Bean etc. Nope, not buying any of those, are we? Monty Python - naaaah. Useless boring uninteresting failures for sure. Absolutely Fabulous? Adele? Another bunch of nobodies. From Charlie Chaplin to Alfred Hitchcock to Cary Grant to BOB HOPE. Yep, he was born in Britain, and his real first name was Leslie. Elizabeth Taylor. Hell, half the rock world is British in origin. Sean Connery, with or without 007. Colin Firth. Patrick Stewart. Emma Thompson. Kenneth Branagh (one of the best actors EVER), Alan Rickman (another one of the best actors EVER) - and speaking of which, Harry Potter Et Al. Yeah, that was a big wash-out, wasn't it - in both book stores AND theaters. Nobody gave a damn about anything some J.K. Rowling wrote, did they? And let's not forget that complete loser Will Shakespeare...

Oh yeah, and never mind that our top TV shows were all Americanized versions of BRITISH television, whether it was "All in the Family" or "American Idol." Those were BRITISH inventions.

Yeah the Brits. They got NOTHIN'. NOTHING of interest. Nobody even pays attention to those boring stuffy British royal weddings either. Nobody tuned in for any of that. Americans don't give a shit about all that pageantry. That's why nobody ever goes over as tourists to visit London or Stonehenge or Stratford-on-Avon or that big-ass Holy Grail of Golf in Scotland where tom delay and all his little friends just HAD to go on an expensive freebie junket, or anything that they got in trouble for back home. Or Irish linen, English Breakfast tea and Earl Grey tea, Irish Breakfast tea (they should all hold their tongues in romneyland, what with their teabagger bits - where do they think THAT originated???), crumpets, scones and other high tea delights, plaid, heather, English lavender and English roses, corgis, cheddar cheese, and more. The ENTIRE UK, including Ireland and Scotland and Wales. And the Empire that spawned US Americans OURSELVES!!!

WHAT AN ARROGANT ASSHOLE romney IS!!!!!! And his arrogant smug snooty wife, too. They're the quintessential Mr. and Mrs. Ugly American, if anybody ever was. Hey shitty mitty - you think Obama was going from country to country "apologizing" for America? I've got BIG news for you, asshole - we're ALL going to be going around the world apologizing for America if YOU somehow manage to buy your way into the White House.

Your cash ain't nothin' but TRASH. Just like YOU.

I noticed something similar about self-described libertarians.

Some of them call themselves that because they're too embarrassed to say they're with the GOP, but given t he choice between D and R, they'd definitely always vote for the R. They don't fool me!!!

I LOVE this post from the comment section:

Many people thought Bush was "the kind of guy you wanted to have a beer with". People are beginning to realize that Romney is "the kind of guy you want to pour a beer on".

This is GREAT, NRaleighLiberal! Congrats!

So many different kinds of tomatoes! Who knew? My mom grew tomatoes every year. Just the plain entry-level kind. And she'd make green tomato pickles that I nicknamed "heartburn pickles" 'cause of the heavy, piercing tang they had. Damn. LOVED 'em. Couldn't get enough of 'em.

I had no idea we had such distinguished members - your garden and all the work you've done in it are seriously impressive!!!

And I dig what you're saying, too.

What I want to see is something beyond flirting with Jon Stewart for one evening. Get noisy! Get out there! Do ALL the Jon Stewarts and don't even stop there. I hope he doesn't flatter himself that doing one Jon Stewart appearance means he's completely discharged his obligation. He's only BEGUN to discharge his obligation.

See, that's the businessman for you. That's the CEO talking.

romney says it's not worth moving heaven and earth just to get one man. Everything with him is a cost-benefit analysis. If you're in the business world, you're all in with the bean counters. For you, that's it. That's all it is. That's all there is. That's another reason why you DON'T run government like a business.

If we'd have worried solely about the cost, we'd never have gone to the moon. If we'd worried about the cost, we'd never have interconnected the highway system from coast-to-coast. It would have been this limited, parochial, one-dimensional thinking that reduces everything down to "can I make any money off it?" Or "is there any money in it?" Some things need to be done not JUST for money. Like the interstate highway system. Like NASA. Like the Hoover Dam. Like the Panama Canal. Like any entity that pushes us farther and higher as a people. That provides for the over-arching good. And yeah, it always can get around to "can I make any money off it?" because there are many ways one can generate profits. Any company that moves goods on the interstate highway system, or uses tools and straps and securing components like velcro will benefit financially from these over-arching projects launched and enabled by a public entity that isn't in it just for profit. Okay, if you want to go there, that's what national defense is all about. With the exception of a few private-industry pirates on the contractor front, that's a public enterprise - that government takes charge of and is responsible for.

Removing bin Laden removed more than just one man. He wasn't just some guy. This was the leader, either past or still at that time. He wasn't just a leader, he was a symbol! He'd been shrewd enough to size up the American psyche and had an idea of what he might be able to provoke among American public with an attack like 9/11. He obviously understood what makes people tick. Maybe he was a student of psychology or he just had instincts. He sure sussed us out. And he had the admiration of all those who hate "the Great Satan." He struck and drew blood as none of them have had the nerve to do. Taking him out was a decapitation strike. It destabilized the enemy like no other injury, especially as they clearly had become complacent. After all, this guy evaded capture for how many years? He'd outlasted the big bad blustering bush/cheney machine forcryingoutloud. He was surely invincible. What a body blow to the al Qaeda body politic when that towering, near mythical figure at the top of their zigurrat, that had done something to drive the "Great Satan" completely out of its collective gourd like no other had, was abruptly and decisively taken out. Executed like some common street thug. What a come-down! That kind of strike delivers a lethal blow to the morale of the enemy and really throws them off their game. To take out a leader of THAT stature, that golden, that legendary (even while some had begun to see him as irrelevant and obsolete, even a joke), was a staggering blow. I read, regrettably I forget where, that Barack Obama literally has been the deadliest US President EVER - to al Qaeda and other operatives. Sure sounds like it to me.

There are some things it's undeniably good to have a federal government for. Especially with someone in charge who represents those who believe government is necessary and beneficial, even essential, for various things, rather than the guy who comes from the camp of those who hate government and see little need for it.

The business mindset, the CEO mentality, has NO BUSINESS in the Oval Office, except as a passing visitor.

I want to see ACTION. NOT words.

There was this cartoon my mother really loved, and she quoted from it often. I don't know if the caption was already a well-worn exclamation, but here it is: "you mean to sit there and say!" The cartoon using this depicted a middle-aged couple in the bathroom together. As I remember it from about age six, she's at the sink and he's on the throne reading the newspaper while he's "working". And she's turning to him and saying something.

So bartlett - "you mean to sit there and say?" Get up off your ass, show your Insanity Party what REAL courage and patriotism is, and CALL THEM OUT. File a libel suit or otherwise make trouble for them. Call them out on EXACTLY who they've become and make a public spectacle of them. If someone like you, with your credentials, were to take a public stand, go on offense, start circulating on radio and broadcast and cable TV. Do full-on internet. For Heaven's sake, there are people you can hire to help you do that shrewdly and more effectively if you don't know how, yourself. A good publicist would be glad to help you and some of them aren't terribly expensive. OR you must have friends who are adept at this kind of strategic thinking and tactical planning whom you could consult or ask their advice or pick their brain for directions or ideas here. They wouldn't charge you and just a few suggestions from them would give you MORE than enough to keep you busy on this pro-active on-the-offensive campaign. So it doesn't have to be about the money. It'd be your time, your name, and your face. Heck, I just gave you a bunch of ideas for free, and MULTIPLE other people here on DU are BRILLIANT thinkers and strategizers and their posts would be beneficial to read and heed.

And all the yahoos would descend upon you for sure. Never mind. You'd start gaining momentum as more reasonable minds began to take notice, issue public statements of gratitude and agreement, and your profile in this regard begins to grow. bartlett, do it for your own enlightened self-interest. There'll be a book deal in this eventually, and you'll do so much television that you'll shape an even more burnished and higher-octane reputation, the kind that images you securely in viewers' and decision-makers' minds as a widely-acknowledged prominent expert. Soon enough, nowadays, that's apt to lead to a radio talk show or an hour on MSNBC, and then you're in a different game. One that pays very nicely. Your future would have been given a shot in the arm, especially as you age. That becomes a lot more important as you age, dude. Don't just stop at the "Daily Show."

Don't just "sit there and say." Do NOT. If you care about your country - hell, if you care about your own party and people who you THOUGHT shared your views and saw the world the way you did. If they once did, as you've now recognized publicly, they don't anymore. You don't even know who or what these folks are anymore. It's THEY who are "other." It's THEY who are foreign and "not one of us." The whole I-am-rubber-you-are-glue thing, where the most heinous and treasonous condemnations your side rains down on ours actually bounce back and land squarely on you. That has to be a horrifically jolting realization to have to face, especially if it's a political party and political ideals that you've grown up with. Ideals that you've had faith in. But you've realized that these people are turning those ideals inside-out and upside-down and backwards.

bartlett, you need to step up. It's for your own good, in the short run AND long run. It's awfully good for your conscience. And you won't be standing there alone. You'll be surprised who'll be standing with you, and how many there'll be.

Don't just "sit there and say." Get up off yer ass and get to work!!! ACTION. The whole actions-speak-louder-than-words thing. You could rescue this country, or at least be the start of that rescue.

Don't just "sit there and say." Get up off yer ass and do something.
