calimary's JournalLike this part a LOT:
"But the scolds are no longer able to define the bounds of respectable opinion. For example, when the usual suspects recently piled on Senator Elizabeth Warren over her call for an expansion of Social Security, they clearly ended up enhancing her stature."
Oh YEAH!!!!!
Wow! Thank you for your sacrifice!
You sacrificed a small chunk of your life to spare the rest of us from having to wade through several inches of ayn rand's paper-bound door-stop diarrhea! One hell of an effort!
Eloquent!
I rather enjoy pointing out another painful truth: that physically and anatomically, the human being is quite literally designed and built to be liberal. The human heart, after all, hangs to the LEFT.
Welcome to DU, chungking34!
Glad you're here! My dad used to joke about it. "IGMFU," he'd say. Which still stands for "I Got Mine, F-U." Such a congenial, generous, compassionate, Christ-centered philosophy, dontchathink?
"Bring in the clowns" indeed. Stinks too bad even for you, 'eh, Edwin?
Amazing piece from this Edwin Lyngar dude.

"If you think that selfishness and cruelty are fantastic personal traits, you might be a libertarian. In the movement no one will ever call you an asshole, but rather, say you believe in radical individualism."

"The Republican convention didnt turn me off of libertarians, but I started losing respect for the movement while watching the financial meltdown. Libertarians were (rightly) furious when our government bailed out the banks, but they fought hardest against help for ordinary Americans. They hated unemployment insurance and reduced school lunches. I used to say similar things, but in such a catastrophic recession isnt the government supposed to help? Isnt that the lesson of the Great Depression?"

"During Obamas first term, I also went to graduate school for creative writing at progressive college, and I settled into my marriage with my wife, a Canadian and goddamn liberal. I cant point to just one thing that pushed me left, but in Obamas first term I had a change of heart, moving from a lifelong extreme into the bosom of conventional liberalism.
I began to think about real people, like my neighbors and people less lucky than me. Did I want those people to starve to death? I care about children, even poor ones. I love the National Park system. The best parts of the America I love are our communities. My libertarian friends might call me a fucking commie (they have) or a pussy, but extreme selfishness is just so isolating and cruel. Libertarianism is unnatural, and the size of the federal government is almost irrelevant. The real question is: what does society need and how do we pay for it?"
No shit, Sherlock. Gee, ya THINK????????
Shit - this whole damn thing is one for my quotes file. And he finishes up with a good one:
"If you believe the Johann Wolfgang von Goethe quote None are more hopelessly enslaved than those who falsely believe they are free, then libertarians live in a prison of their own ideology."
I guess some souls really CAN be saved. How 'bout that!
I once heard it said that ayn rand turned selfishness into a sacrament.
And you're spot-on about charitable feelings. Remember when cheney and friends openly scoffed at the whole idea of empathy? And they were proud of it! Viewed it as a sign of strength and character and very "the adults are back in charge." Which is what they actually said after they TOOK office following the Clinton administration. DISGUSTING. Utterly and completely DISGRACEFUL!!! Ironically, many of these same people claim (and rather loudly, too) that they are devout followers of Jesus Christ. Seriously, understanding the message of Christ as I was taught it in Catholic school, selfishness was certainly and demonstrably NOT His thing. As my mom used to say "heart like a BB." A most excellent comparision. BBs are very small, and very hard, and very cold.
Ironically, Pripyat actually looks quite beautiful.
At first glance, my reaction to the photo was - "shit, what a gorgeous city! It'd be neat to live in a place with all those trees." Never mind that the whole place probably glows in the dark...
Teabuggery is more like it.
Too much even for jonathan karl, 'eh? Well how 'bout that.
