Biden narrowly ahead in Iowa as Sanders surges, Warren drops: poll

By Tal Axelrod - 12/10/19 09:54 PM EST

Former Vice President Joe Biden and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) are leading the 2020 Democratic primary field in the crucial caucus state of Iowa as Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) sinks, according to a Emerson College poll released Tuesday.

Biden and Sanders are neck-and-neck at the top of the survey, garnering the support of 23 percent and 22 percent of Democratic caucus-goers, respectively. South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg comes in third at 18 percent and Warren sits at fourth with 12 percent.

Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) comes in fifth place in the poll at 10 percent, while no other candidate breaks double digits.

“Joe Biden is a statesman, leader, and above all else, a unifier. I had the fortune to tell Joe all of this in person when he visited the west side of Las Vegas last month. More than 50 years ago, I personally witnessed his ability to bring together people of different races, cultures, and backgrounds in Newcastle County, Delaware. Today, that kind of leadership is needed to unify our country. Joe possesses exactly the type of leadership that this country needs now. He will heal and unify the soul of our nation. Joe Biden gets major South Carolina endorsement from former Harris backers

Columbia, South Carolina – A prominent group of black women activists in South Carolina that backed Kamala Harris endorsed Joe Biden on Tuesday, further strengthening the former vice president's standing in the first-in-the-South primary state.

Known as "The Reckoning Crew," the group of three dozen women includes current and former elected officials, activists, and faith leaders and has played a critical role in grassroots organizing in the state. Biden's path to the nomination relies heavily on the South Carolina primary, which figures to play an outsized role in determining the party's presidential nominee because of its high percentage of African American voters.

"It's time for us to unite as one and put all of our energy behind the candidate who will not only beat Donald Trump but knows how to fix what he's broken on day one," said the group's founder, Bernice Scott, a former Richland County councilwoman. "And from there, we are confident Joe will continue to build on the history he made with Barack Obama."

"I know it’s very uncool – at least in the precincts of snarky lefty Twitter – to defend Joe Biden, but I’ll give it a try."

Biden has virtually branded the word as his own. During his first presidential bid in 1988, he assailed Republican rhetoric: “Don’t buy all this malarkey!” As the veep in 2012, he mocked Paul Ryan for spouting “a bunch of malarkey.” In 2016, he said that Trump’s promises were “a bunch of malarkey.”

Of course, Noah is wrong here..

On cable TV, Trevor Noah said that nobody knows what malarkey means “unless you’re over the age of 80.” New York magazine weighed in as well, because it’s important to be edgy. Its headline: 77-Year-Old Candidate Hopes ‘No Malarkey’ Will Excite Voters.

They’re his base, and they’ve kept him at the top of the Democratic race. The “No Malarkey” slogan is designed specifically for them. Young people think the slogan is synonymous with old guy, but, as one Biden precinct captain in Iowa told Politico, “Older people know what it means, and older people vote.”

Of course, if Biden does win the nomination – propelled by older voters, and racking up delegates in the most populous states thanks especially to older black voters – he’ll need to gin up support among the young for the home stretch. But that’s a fight for another day, and if young people were to ultimately decide that their landslide hostility toward Trump is somehow outweighed by Biden’s profile as an old guy, the consequences for this nation could be tragic.

You're right Malarkey is a noun.. I'll have to tell Dick Polman.. lol

Thank you, countingbluecars!

Thank u for the article as well - poignant & so well written. This young chap has learned a thing or two from us old folks it seems. I hope his generation, his contemporaries (millenials and post-millenials or whatever they're called) will realize what's at stake and care enough to turn out in record breaking numbers to throw this fake POTUS & world's greatest Idiot out of office. This is by far the most important election of our times. I'm confident us older folks will get Joe the nomination. Wed Dec 11, 2019, 10:23 AM

those already on Medicare/Medicaid and those on their parents policies. M4A loses to the public option or keep things the same among those who have employer based coverage and those who purchased their own plans. Nearly half of those who have health care coverage through their parents are unsure which plan they support. Considering that the youth demographic is the least likely to show up and vote, it leads me to believe that the number that support Bernie or Warren is skewed upward.

FWIW, it is troubling to notice that there is a category for those that don't even have a clue who is providing their insurance coverage--are people that oblivious to an issue that should be important in their lives? It's also equally interesting that there isn't any mention of a category for those who have no insurance coverage at all. We know that demographic exists so why isn't there any mention of them in the poll?

I've had difficulty believing a lot of the poll results that Emerson has provided this entire primary season for who is the most popular candidate since there have been large swings going from month to month. Even though Emerson is touted as being rated as an A- poll, I have even less confidence in their results when they drill down to individual issues like health care. There are too many inconsistencies and I doubt that they will remain an A- poll in the future. Three decades of experience as a statistician have taught me to read between the lines.

ETA: Is the "something else" option for those willing to abandon the ACA (aka Republicans) who also won't support the public option or M4A?

Not surprised however. I like Liz and most of her ideas but I just dont see her as our best candidate. She doesnt really have much spark or charisma and has minimal appeal to minority voters. Her support seems to be narrow and doesnt play well in many parts of the country. I think her numbers now are more in line with reality.
