In Sam Stein's recent piece on the state of background check negotiations, he mentions a compromise background check bill, which would garner bipartisan support, might include an online portal for conducting the check. While it doesn't give the President everything he wants on this, it would be a huge step in the right direction. If an instant, online NICS portal became available, I'm sure it would be welcomed by most gun owners, and used widely.

I, for one, would love to have such a tool when selling a firearm. Right now, the NICS database is not available to private sellers. As a result, most private firearm transactions are conducted without a background check. If the NICS system gets opened to the public, that would change.
