Frances Perkins - first woman appointed to a US Cabinet position

Born on this day in 1880, she served as Secretary of Labor from 1933-1945. She helped pull the labor movement into the New Deal coalition and was crucial in establishing Social Security.

Galvanized by the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire, she focused her efforts on labor, and was appointed Commissioner of Labor by then Governor FDR. When he became our President he appointed her to his Cabinet.

Much more here.

The Frances Perkins Center is dedicated to honoring her memory.

Sorry that the video starts with a commercial.

The most important liberal you’ve never heard of: Frances Perkins

This is an excellent video. Frances conceived and stood up SS. I can not begin to imagine this country without it.

ETA: Yesterday was her 133rd birthday anniversary.

niyad, this one is especially for you.

and he is still talking about Frances. It sounds like he will do one more show on SS.

I really like the fact he is highlighting how important she was to an entire nation and the audio tapes just bring her to life.

Yeah Women !

O'Donnell again used "his beloved Frances Perkins" to frame the SS discussion. The audio clips of Ms. Perkins are delightful.

I noticed that a lot of DUers were pissed last night about what Lawrence had to say.

Thanks for all the links here... I don't watch tv news so I'd have missed it completely.
