Noting against Chris Hayes, but Ed needs to be back on PRIMETIME MSNBC!

(72 posts)Sorry but Chris was MSNBC's version of Bill O'Reilly. Those ridiculous poll questions he always knows are going to get 90+% support for his view are pointless. I like ED in that he represents the hard progressive view, is very much about middle and working class Americans, and strongly supports union and labor, but I felt as though MSNBC needed fresh blood. I watched Chris Hayes whenever I was awake during the hours that "Up" was on and I like his intelligence and overall demeanor on his show. I'll watch ED on the weekends but he can stay right there and at least give Chris some time to get settled into a daily show.

(50,949 posts)Put Ed in one of those slots.
Certainly we don't need a Lawrence repeat every day.
Tarheel_Dem
(31,233 posts)does his cancer stricken wife not matter to you folks? AFAIK, Ed still has a daily radio show, and he still has a family which I'm guessing is his primary focus at this time. And you should insert "IMHO" after the snark about Lawrence. You don't speak for "WE".

(1,437 posts)Every account I've read has said that Ed was demoted to make room for Chris Hayes. Is that really surprising? It's just plain logic. MSNBC has been skewing younger and younger over the last few years. Anyone with a brain can see it.
Ed was merely putting on a brave face, as all these guys do when they're put out to pasture.
Not really sure why you feel the need to be a dick about this.

(8,515 posts)Hes smart all right and understands the issues...But the problem with MSNBC is that there are never any conservatives willing to come on and debate.. And I dont blame them..they stand for nothing but austerity destructive economics...and realize that they can not defend
their positions...
Consequently all we get is a bunch of bobble heads sitting around a table agreeing with each
other until I cant stand it anymore..
Rachel has been playing the Rand Paul interview over and over because it defined what these shows should be about. Kicking right wing asses...Now Thats Entertainment!!

(37,326 posts)Chris Hayes' show, if it's anything like his weekend show was, (and I know it IS) is just a bunch of very intelligent people who agree with each other, talking around a table. It's like they don't even acknowledge their TV audience-even when they return from commercials. It's like something on C-Span 3 on the weekend. BORRRRING! Rachel Maddow, in comparison, has a very clever yet still entertaining show. Even when she DOESN'T have guests who disagree with her, she has an interesting presentation.

(280 posts)Ed was good during elections. Chris is more well-rounded with subjects that are relevant and of interest. Give Ed some of the time now covering a second copy of Hardball or Rachel Maddow.

(90 posts)I don't even have a TV now, so this doesn't really affect me.
But I think it would be a great idea just to remove a repeat of the same exact show- not even a second hour of it, and put Ed or Chris Hayes there.
I never understood the repeat of Hardball. Probably never will.
But Ed is dealing with family matters now, so I'll wait as long as it takes for his new weekend show.

(9,314 posts)There is room and need for both. I like both, but I do think Ed has been treated unfairly, so that is what it boils down to for me -- the fairness issue. Chris was put in that time slot to appeal to a certain age group. He had his show for only 8 months. Ed was been on MSNBC for years. I think this is more of a case of ageism than anything else. And that is upsetting. And this is something NBC has done repeatedly, and no one calls them on it.
Ed and Chris are just different breeds of political cats, and I don't think the question is WHICH ONE since there is obviously room for both.

(493 posts)I stopped watching him as he is rude to his guests, he interrupts everyone to get his opinion in, he lacks the patience to wait for their full answer and many times they never get to complete it.
KatyMan
(4,190 posts)he is exactly the same way on his radio show. I believe that smaller doses (weekend slot) will suit his delivery style much better.
Jamaal510
(10,893 posts)thought that was a dumb move on MSNBC's part to move him to the weekends. While Hayes gets into detail and covers some topics that Ed didn't cover too much, his show is Drysville. I can sit through a segment or two, but I have trouble making it through an entire show. But I was liking Ed's passion, particularly with working class issues and calling out the GOP for whenever they pull some bullshit.

(387 posts)Now don't misunderstand me. I like ED. I tend to think the way he thinks. However, I do not like pundits that are egenda driven. He will tend to make sure the Dem and/or narrative fits a Liberal Agenda. Now ... you can NOT get more Liberal than I. Yeah, I know you think you can, but you can't. Rachel Maddow is perfect. She will NOT try and get the world view, the Obama/Dem narrative to fit her agenda. She is fact driven and will tear Obama and the Dems apart if necessary.
I watch so little "new entertainment" anymore as we have too many Ed Shultzs and not enough Maddows.

And I'm always so excited when Mike Papantonio fills in for Ed on his radio show. Ed stands up for the working joe and he's good to have on our side since he sounds like a good ol' boy, but he's not that smart or informed and he gets on my nerves.

Chris Hayes is a really nice way to end the day. Not always in the mood for the boot stomping and yelling that went on all too much on the ED show.

now if Matthews was doing 2 live shows that would be different but NOT a rerun at 4/7 o clock. They need someone with a personality. Chris made a good fill in host but he doesnt have it to run an hour every day.

(5,168 posts)Prep for his noon start on radio, three hour live show, then dead time between shows. Prep for the 8pm slot, and the hour on TV. He was having Papantonio spell him every week it seemed.
Ed is taping a town hall in Madison, Wisc. on May 2nd, for his first weekend show. He'll probably start on May 4th or 11th.
Chris had a good show tonight. He covered the Reinhart and Rogoff Excel error nicely.
Fugelsang is one I'm going to miss once Current is gone, as Al Jazeera takes over. I have DVR so I can cover both right now. I hope he ends up somewhere as a regular.

(3,300 posts)And you're right about Ed. The strain just got to him. It was rough doing the 2 shows with all the preparation - and Ed is always prepared. A natural born talker. I can't wait to see the first show - my brother and I should be in it as we were in the first few rows.

(5,275 posts)Ed's OK but I'm not a huge fan. Also I too believe it was Ed's call to end his weekly TV show.
Ed's passion is admirable but 1) he sounds too much like Rush voice wise for me and 2) he's a little too much into hunting for my blood.
I'm fine with Chris but two people who deserve a prime time TV spot are Thom Hartmann and Amy Goodman. Both are brilliant, Amy is tireless in her work for true democracy.

(1,805 posts)That is my thought as well. Too much alike. I much prefer Rachel, big time, but they should have left Chris on the weekend. Steve Kornacky would have been a much better choice, I really like him, extremely sharp. I doubt if "The Cycle" is going to remain anyway. I find S.E.Cupp all but unbearable, Krystal Ball just bugs me (no charisma at all) and Toure, while interesting at times is a bit too much in love with Toure.
I'm positive Tweety has some kind of hold on NBC, what it is we'll no doubt never know. I'd enjoy a behind the scenes at MSNBC tell all. If they got rid of Tweety's, I have no doubt the ratings would improve.
I think Jennifer Granholm or Eliot Spitzer should def be considered. She's going to lose her show anyway, and the woman is smart and very quick witted. They both have announced their leaving or have left Current after the Al Jazerra news was out.
I've forgiven Spitzer for his transgressions, they certainly weren't worse than any of the others and not as egregious as some (Mark Sanford)? Jennifer deserves a platform and if someone doesn't grab her they're making a big mistake.
At least Cenk isn't on anymore. I couldn't/can't stand his oversized ego and continual whining about Obama and well, pretty much everything. He's almost a Rino. It would be nice if he owned up to the fact that he just wasn't made for TV. I really, really couldn't stand his MSNBC show. I maybe turned Current on 2-3 times. Ugh. Not sure if they couldn't afford it, but not being in HD really sucks.
Last comment (whew, right)? Do not ever, ever change Rachel or Lawrence. Love them both. I was happy to give to the K.I.N.D. fund again for holiday gifts. A super cause and I'm proud of Lawrence (and others) for shining a light on an imminently solvable problem.

(2,004 posts)Haven't watched much of Chris Hayes since he started his new show, but I caught the 4/24 show and it was very good. His coverage of Rogoff & Rheinhard was outstanding. His interview with the gentleman from Yemen was excellent, too. I really like Ed, so I hope his new show gets a lot of viewers. I plan to DVR it to make sure I can see what he has to say. No one around here carries his radio show. All our radio stations carry are the right wing hate mongers. No wonder we have so many problems in rural areas.
I did notice that MSNBC had a disturbing number of ads by the oil companies tonight stating how great oil companies are providing jobs and a clean environment. Their propaganda machine was really at full bore tonight. Pushing hard for the Keystone and to stop coverage of the oil spills in Michigan and Arkansas.
Inkfreak
(1,695 posts)I think it started after that BP disaster. I'd see the broadcasters doing story after story about these oil companies and then dozens of oil company commercials. Makes me laugh. I suppose you could look at it in 2 ways. 1-MSNBC is taking their money and still reporting on their sins. 2-MSNBC is full of it... The cynic in me says the latter. Either way I watch little of it now. I find the hours of programming repetitive. I can find much more diverse stories on the web.
And DU of course.
Oh and I think Chris is boring. Probably not the popular opinion. But intelligence does not equal interesting. If I'm to be invested in an hour long news show in today's vast market of programming, I need to be sucked in.
KharmaTrain
(31,706 posts)...good ones take time to mature. Ed's early shows (when he was on in Rev Al's timeslot) were a clusterfuck. I recall people here panning the show and calling Ed a RINO/DINO and not a "true believer". He found his stride with the Wisconsin situation...nearly two years after his show began. Let's give Chris a bit of time to work out the kinks that every new show has. Surely if it's "too wonky" as some suggest it'll be noted (especially if ratings are poor) and modifications will be made. My bets are the show you're seeing now will be very different in 6 months.
As far as Ed...I still hear him every day on the radio. It was his choice to cut back...the travel back and forth from his home in Fargo to New York was a backbreaker...especially when his wife was diagnosed with cancer. Television's a transient animal...and very labor intensive. I'm glad Ed still has the weekend shows where he can and will focus on labor issues.

(4,458 posts)ask for Both! Give Ed (if he would do it) one of "Tweety's" time slots.
I've heard Ed state he asked for his weekend time slot so he could slow down a bit. He cites doing his radio show 5 days a week for 3 hours a day PLUS his TV show is wearing on him--that he (paraphrasing here) "is no spring chicken".
I understand that.

(7,572 posts)I really believe Ed when he says he needs less time in New York, too much traveling doing that and his radio show, which I'm sure is much less stressful. He is coming back for a weekend show, which will involve a different format than his daily show, so suppose time is needed for a new production team to work everything out.
Chris has the brains, but Ed has the passion. We need both. The only criticism I have of Chris is that he tries to talk as fast as he thinks, which doesn't work, just exhausting to try to follow. His weekend show was perfect for him to have time to develop his themes. Compressing into half an hour needs some change in the pace.
And two hours of Tweety is TOO much, I can barely stand one. Why not repeat someone else, if they can't add another host. Or move one of the daytime hosts to the evening, there are several that could do that successfully. Martin Bashir is someone I like.
I like Steve Karnacky also, in the weekend shows.

(25,415 posts)Maybe because he is close to my age. And fairly calm, brings up topics most pundits don't get into, is intellectual. I love Ed but he could be very bombastic at times. Her show is the one I watch every night because she has large narratives and connects different issues to each other. Sees the big picture.

(1,560 posts)I like Chris, but this is no contest. Ed is a better host and appeals more to the average working American. MSNBC seems to be getting away from those types of folks and instead is doubling-down on more "wonkish" types. They don't speak to people in ways that relate to them much. Chris was fine during the weekends, but we need Ed back on PrimeTime. Not to mention that Chris is getting killed in the ratings.
