WASHINGTON -- Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), speaking at the first Judiciary Committee hearing on immigration reform Friday, tied the issue to bombings this week in Boston that were allegedly perpetrated by immigrants who had reportedly lived in the United States for years.
"Given the events of this week, its important for us to understand the gaps and loopholes in our immigration system," he said. "While we dont yet know the immigration status of the people who have terrorized the communities in Massachusetts, when we find out, it will help shed light on the weaknesses of our system."

Still, some Republicans have argued that any plans to legalize undocumented immigrants and change the visa system should be delayed by the events. Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa), an outspoken opponent of immigration reform, made a similar point earlier this week. His remarks came before there was a suspect in the case and referred to a reported "person of interest" who was a Saudi national. That person has since been cleared.

(2,514 posts)I was so afraid, that some Republicans would attempt to appear positive on immigration... nice to know a big chunk of them simply will stick with their talking points... cant wait till 14

From an immigration perspective, neither of them are undocumented immigrants, since their family was granted asylum, so it is not clear how their immigration status is relevant at all.

(9,350 posts)It seems that linking the Boston Marathon bombing to immigration reform is, or will be the new Republican Party theme. Laura Inghram already linked the bombing to immigration reform. A number of Republicans may now come out and say immigration reform needs to be either slowed or stopped due to the bombing. It is interesting that these young men (the bombing suspect) have nothing to do with immigration reform.
