Paul Ryan On Abortion: 'We Want A Country Where It Isn't Even Considered'
WASHINGTON -- Rep. Paul Ryan, the Republican vice presidential nominee in 2012 and an abortion opponent, said Thursday that anti-abortion activists should try to build a broad coalition and find common ground with supporters of abortion rights as a way to advance their agenda.
Ryan, R-Wis., said in a speech to the Susan B. Anthony List that those who oppose abortion "need to work with people who consider themselves pro-choice because our task isn't to purge our ranks. It's to grow them."
"We don't want a country where abortion is simply outlawed. We want a country where it isn't even considered," he said.

(16,984 posts)Where are all those antiabortion politicians when a family is bankrupted due to medical bills, when a man dies before his wedding because he wasn't insured and didn't get adequate medical care, when an insurance company decides that in the middle of chemo is the perfect time to drop someone's coverage, when a young boy dies because hid abscessed tooth wasn't extracted in time?
It's much, much easier to oppose something, to say one isn't going to budge or compromise, than to create access to medical care.

They tried de-funding Women's Health Clinics. Once they realized how much it was going to cost the State to care for All babies being born in the Welfare system. They decided to attempt to start funding the Clinics again.
It maybe a good idea in Theory, but Republicans hate poor people getting free money way more than they despise Abortion.

What's that? He won't actually do any of that shit and is just a religious nut who thinks women are all baby breeding machines?

(50,553 posts)It has a bit of a ring to it...but unless he wants to make abstinence-only sex ed punishable by hard time, make contraception free to all,,mandate condom distribution in schools and destigmatize their use, and increase recreational opportunities for youth in small towns so the kids have something to do at night besides sex, drinking and drugs, and fund social spending so the people who have all the babies he wants can afford to feed them, he can shut the hell up about banning abortion.
niyad
(113,254 posts)so much as mentions contraception, or teens having sex. also wants to defund PP and give all the money to those xian-based crisis pregnancy centers.
it just keeps getting more insane by the day.

(50,553 posts)The people who want abortion banned, their favorite word is freedom. But all the countries that have instituted abortion bans that actually stopped abortion (unlike, say, Ireland where you just go to England if you're healthy enough to travel) are dictatorships like Romania and El Salvador.

(6,960 posts)Abortion was considered and performed before it was legal, so making it illegal will not make it go away...Poof!
We will simply return to the old days when there was more maternal morbidity and mortality. Plus, where there is a product or a service that people want, there will be purveyors of said product or service... just look at drugs. For the rich, a safe abortion (framed as something else like D&C for dysfunctional uterine bleeding) will be a plane ride away. For the poor... a lysol douche, a coat hanger, a back alley butcher.
Ryan is an idiot who should have been aborted.

(1,122 posts)I consider Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wisconsin #01) a sociopath.
It is distrurbing that the Republican party nominated him as Mitt Romney's vice-presidential running mate for 2012. Given Romney's coldness, to those who are among the have-nots (which is the overwhelming majority of the United States), somehow it was an appropriate second-banana selection.
I think Paul Ryan makes Sarah Palin seem somewhat sane. (If the standard is based on which of the two is less dangerous.)

There are plenty of countries he can go to if he wants all abortion to be illegal. Three, to be exact: Vatican City, Chile, and El Salvador.
