7. It is not likely that they are learning much in that short of time.

The better approach imo is to proceed with their planned agenda and when there is significant news break in. Instead of trying to do 24x7 of nothing in several hours of broadcast.

9. There is no news outlet in the world who would do that. In addition, for people just tuning in it

Not everyone can drop everything and get in front of a tv the moment a story breaks. I guarantee that at any given moment, there are people tuning in for the first time.

If it bothers you, I'm sure there is a cartoon channel you can watch instead.

6. What would you expect them to do?

Lots of folks are just hearing about this ... this is the middle of the afternoon in much of the country, most people probably don't even know this has happened. So, people will be tuning in all the time and will want to be caught up.

This is a pretty big deal.

Makes me very depressed -- the country will go nuts.

The thing that annoys me most about the media is that whenever there is a major story such as this, all the outlets love to milk it to death. They've discussed it so much already, one would get the impression that there is literally nothing else happening in the country right now. Don't get me wrong--what happened today in Boston was unfortunate with those people losing their arms and legs and experiencing trauma, but like OP said, the coverage is becoming repetitive. I guess they've been doing this extensive coverage in case if there are any new details, but even so, they could still just discuss said details, and then discuss something different for the rest of the hour.
At least this gives me an excuse to find something else on TV instead of watching politics all day.

12. Here is my conclusion why it is bad for them to make this a continuous story

They now have to justify broadcasting nothing else and that if they hear a rumor they put it out there right away. Instead of confirming it first.

Mother Jones has an article

Question Everything You Hear About the Boston Marathon Bombing

Unless it involves something like NASA launching a rocket or the inauguration it should not be the total focus. People can wait until the regular news to find out what is happening. When there is new development they can either interrupt a regular broadcast (but they misuse that too), wait until the next news cycle or use the crawler.

I don't like hearing stuff they made up or use from unreliable sources.
