Louisiana Governor Jindal's popularity slumps after bold tax plan

By Stephanie Grace
NEW ORLEANS | Sun Apr 7, 2013 8:04am EDT

(Reuters) - Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, one of the nation's most prominent Republicans and a possible 2016 presidential candidate, has fallen out of favor with local voters, and his bold plan to scrap the state income tax is running into trouble.

Jindal was re-elected to a second term with two-thirds of the vote in 2011. But his Louisiana approval rating was down to 38 percent in a recent poll, worse than Democratic President Barack Obama in one of the most conservative states.

The poll suggested voters think he is spending more time traveling outside the state and burnishing his credentials for a possible White House run than tending to local matters.

As the Louisiana Legislature prepares to kick off its two-month session on Monday, Jindal's signature proposal to eliminate the state income tax is facing resistance.

mostly from members of his own party, ironically (right now Republicans have a supermajority in both chambers and can basically do whatever the hell they want and the fact that archconservative Pence can't get his own party to rubberstamp his plan is particularly delicious ). He was even forced to bring in some Tea Party group to run ads supporting his plan

I wonder if this is a sign that the Republican "low taxes on the wealthy (but higher on everybody else)" mentality is starting to be rejected by the voters? We can only hope.

particularly when exemptions are going to be removed from the sales tax such that it would affect service industries.

Jindal is proposing a new 6.25 percent sales tax on services that would fall on businesses of the type that is the focus of the Ernst & Young criticism. The tax would be charged when businesses pay other companies for accounting work, bookkeeping, payroll services and a long list of other items.

The Republican governor proposes to use the revenue from that new sales tax on services, along with an overall increase in the state sales tax and tobacco taxes to help offset the cost of eliminating the state's income taxes as Jindal wants.

"To the extent that services are primarily consumed by business, such as professional services, including these business-to-business sales in the sales tax base will have a significant negative consequence," the report says.
