Frank Lautenberg Hill return unclear
New Jersey Sen. Frank Lautenberg will not return to Capitol Hill next week, and now its unclear when or even if the veteran lawmaker will be back.
Democrats in New Jersey and Washington are watching the moves of the retiring 89-year-old senator closely because if he does not return to the Senate, it could affect the balance of power in the chamber, where Democrats currently hold a 55-45 majority.
Lautenberg, who has been plagued by health problems, has been absent much of the year, including missing a marathon series of budget votes just before Congress adjourned for a two-week recess.
On Friday night, with the Senate still in recess, Lautenberg released a statement announcing he would be out next week. Lautenberg did not make clear any return date.

(11,464 posts)1. Timing is everything here...this could be very bad
Cory Booker is heavily favored to be the next Senator in 2014.
However, Chris Christie would replace temporarily and most certainly name a republican.
However2-Chrstie could wreck havoc on plans if he named some other democratic person and that person was a Jersey machine person, at which point, it would be harder for Booker who is not part of the machine to run.
From what the above article states- Lautenberg resigning before August would mean a temp, followed by normal election Nov.2013.
Lautenberg retiring after that point would mean temp holding seat til Jan. 2015.
yikes.
