Connecticut Senate Approves Gun Control Bill, House Begins Deliberations

HARTFORD—

After a debate that was at moments impassioned and agonized, the state Senate Wednesday voted 26-to-10 to approve a historic and far-reaching gun-control bill that proponents said was their toughest-in-the-nation response to the Newtown school massacre.

The emergency bill was quickly sent to the House, where approval is expected after a floor debate Wednesday night.

The vote came after weeks of negotiation between legislative leaders of the Democratic majority and Republican minority in response to the gun violence of Dec. 14 – when 20 children and 6 adults were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown killed with a military-style semiautomatic rifle by Adam Lanza, 20, who then killed himself.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy says he will sign the bill once both legislative chambers approve it.

UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE

Connecticut Gun Bill Signed Into Law By Gov. Dannel Malloy

WASHINGTON -- Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy (D) signed a sweeping new set of gun control reforms on Thursday, less than 12 hours after the Connecticut state legislature approved the legislation in a late-night session.

In a signing ceremony at the state capitol, Malloy called the event profoundly moving, and said Connecticut had come together in a way that few places were able to do.

"Our leaders in Washington are so divided," Malloy said, adding that "there's no excuse" for lawmakers in Washington to oppose expanded background checks.

Connecticut's two Democratic senators, Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy, both support expanded gun control.

Gov. Dannel Malloy Signs Sweeping Conn. Gun Control Bill Into Law

HARTFORD, Conn. (CBSNewYork/AP) – Gov. Dannel P. Malloy has signed into law some of the country’s tightest gun restrictions in response to December’s shooting massacre at a Newtown school.

Malloy signed the bill at a ceremony Thursday alongside family members of some of the victims of the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, several hours after it won approval in the General Assembly.

The bill passed 26-10 in the Senate and 105-44 in the House of Representatives. Both were bipartisan votes.

“In some senses I hope this is an example to the rest of the nation,” Malloy said. “Certainly to our leaders in Washington who seem so deeply divided about an issue such as universal background checks, where the country is not divided itself.”

So many of us in CT feel a special responsibility to do this. The hurt and pain of Newtown will never go away but at least we in CT said we finally did the right thing.

If we hadn't we would have been shamed forever. My faith in living here has been renewed.
