Md. House Passes Gun Control Bill, 78-61

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WJZ/AP) – The Maryland House of Delegates has approved a gun-control measure proposed by Democratic Gov. Martin O’Malley by a vote of 78-61.

Political reporter Pat Warren has the latest.

It has a number of differences from a measure the Senate passed more than a month ago. The two chambers will have to work out the differences before the General Assembly adjourns at midnight Monday.

Still, the two House and Senate are largely in agreement on the major parts of the bill. They include a fingerprinting requirement to get a license for handguns and an assault weapons ban. The legislation also would limit magazines to 10 bullets.

O’Malley proposed the bill in the aftermath of December’s massacre at a Newtown, Conn., school, where a gunman killed 20 children and six adults before committing suicide.

Now if more states follow suit and then the federal government passes strict laws for straw sales and gun shows, things will definitely get better.

Somehow, the thought of someone getting more time for a few grams of pot, then for selling a gun to someone illegally, makes me a wee bit nuts.............

made me proud:

http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2013/03/15/maryland-death-penalty/1989977/

"I applaud the Maryland General Assembly for choosing to meet evil not with evil, but with a justice worthy of our best nature as human beings," Archbishop William E. Lori of Baltimore said in a statement.

"As people of faith who live in a civilized nation, we recognize that those who have done great harm to others deserve punishment," he said. "However, we must also recognize that every life has value, and that we cannot overcome crime by executing criminals, nor can we restore the lives of the innocent by ending the lives of those convicted of their murders."

and of course the vote on legalizing same sex marriage made at the polls by compassionate, understanding Marylanders.

And yes, we have great crab cakes!

Proud to be a Marylander, though a displaced person (I'm too poor to move) in Illinois, which is not nearly as blue as the media make it out to be.

Maryland Senate passes gun-control bill, among strictest in the US

The Maryland Senate gave final approval to Gov. Martin O'Malley's sweeping gun control bill Thursday night, sending the legislation to the governor for his promised signature.

The legislation bans the sale of assault weapons, requires fingerprints and a license to buy a handgun and limits magazines to 10 bullets, among other provisions, giving Maryland one the strictest gun laws in the nation.

Some opponents have vowed to petition the bill to referendum. If they are successful, the law would be delayed for a year and be on the ballot for Maryland voters to consider in November 2014.

The Senate voted 28-19 Thursday to accept House amendments to the legislation, which also requires gun owners to report lost or stolen firearms to police, empowers state police to audit gun dealers and bars more people with mental illnesses from buying guns.

As an expat, I also pay MD state taxes as well as my US taxes because most of my income is US-based.

It's not that big of a bite, all things considered. And I do like to consider all things ... !
