Many Republicans "privately concede" former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford (R), who easily won a runoff last night, could hand a safe Republican House seat to Elizabeth Colbert Busch (D), Politico reports.
"Fellow GOP pols don't like him. Neither do female voters. His campaign is largely an exercise in seeking forgiveness for his transgressions four years ago -- a defensive crouch that makes it tricky to take the fight to Colbert Busch, the sister of late-night comedian Stephen Colbert."
Charleston Post and Courier: "The political race many had anticipated would unfold in the 1st Congressional District -- the national comedian's sister versus the once-disgraced governor angling for a comeback -- is finally here."
It's worth noting that Public Policy Polling, which nailed the runoff result, found Colbert Busch leading Sanford by two points.

(1,277 posts)Infidelity only matters to a GOP voter when it's a Democrat doing the fucking. When it's one of their ilk it's swept under the rug and all is forgiven.
From what I've seen of Colbert-Busch she seems quite impressive but the district is decidedly GOP. We've all seen this movie before.
Maybe he'll start talking about rape, though. Then all bets are off.

(579 posts)fact that he is parading as a "super conservative" who hates government spending when he did some government spending of his own for his own? Everybody knows about that, it will be hard to cover-it up.

(1,277 posts)I'm from Oklahoma and my guess is that our whackadoos are very similar to their whackadoos. If the govt. spending thing were to be used effectively it would have been done in the primary by another GOP candidate. It may have, but it won't matter now. As long as she has that (D) in front of her name on the ballot it's going to be tough sledding for her.
Most rank and file GOP voters will dimply default to the (R) because they're not a (D). It doesn't usually matter who the (R) is.
I like to joke that a ham sandwich would have beaten Obama in my state and I firmly believe that to be the case. And I'm not kidding. Literally a ham sandwich. I don't think SC is a lot different on the whole, though it probably does have a higher minority population that typically votes for the good guys. Still, if they're not in the district she's running in that bloc isn't going to help her much.
I hope she wins though. It's just hard to imagine at this stage.
