Related: About this forumTonight and tomorrow ... Fist-Shaking Moon 🌕
We hereby give this month's full moon a new name: Fist-Shaking Moon. That's because this full moon is now filling the sky with its light, just as the Perseid meteor shower is rising to its peak on the mornings of August 11, 12 and 13. Yes, the moon will wane in the coming days. But a full moon now means a last quarter moon on August 11. And a last quarter moon is a pretty bright moon, rising at midnight, just as the night's meteor-watching kicks into full gear. As for us, we'll be standing outside shaking our fists at this full moon. Will moonlight ruin this year's Perseids? It'll surely exert an influence. Meteor-watchers here's how you can optimize your chances this month. Moon-lovers here's more about tonight's tonight's full moon: https://bit.ly/2OTyWFt

(23,310 posts)I like it. We always called Augusts full moon the Sturgeon Moon. Fist-Shaking is much more fun.

(23,310 posts)In Oregon at the moment helping my uncle move into assisted living. When I left on Friday, there were two fires north of town in Dixon and one in Perma. There was a little fire near Polson too. I was just starting to see smoke settling in the valleys as I drove west. I heard there was a fire in Park County...not a sure if thats true or not. I couldnt find it on inciweb.

(86,572 posts)I guess it's hard to tell if you aren't even in the state! I checked inciweb this morning and still didn't see anything but on YPR they mentioned the Dixon and Perma fires. The wind is coming in from the south now and not so smokey. I haven't heard of any fires in Park County... yet. The smoke was coming from outside Park County so I'll just have to look again.
I'll look again in a few, I've been paying bills and shopping today. It's been hot and dry down here and we could spark up anytime.
Have a safe a pleasant drive home! And thanks!

(23,310 posts)the temps were between 100 and 107! I dont know how that whole part of Washington and Oregon arent incinerated. My uncles home is on a bluff above the Columbia River....we watched fire planes scooping water out of the river to dump on the little fires in that area. I hope we can get through August without all hell breaking loose with wildfires in MT.

(86,572 posts)I would be in trouble with those temps. It's not going to cool down around here for at least a week, 75F is the point where I start to wilt like lettuce.
This kind of heat and smoke from fires is not a good combo, that happened in 2016 down here when YNP was burning down again, my eyes burned and throat was sore for months.

And I wouldn't have remembered the meteor shower if I hadn't read your post.

(86,572 posts)when the next one comes, though I did see the comet several times. It is usually cloudy when there's a meteor shower here but probably not this time since we're stuck in a dry, hot air mass which would be clear except this evening there seems to be smoke from a distant fire filling the air so I might have to close my windows tonight, ugh. But meteors are still visible.

(130,865 posts)Partly cloudy now, after bit of a storm, so MAY get to see some of the Full Moon; will look for perseids later in the week, but not too confident.

(86,572 posts)You can see everything, but it has to be clear!
The moon came up orange and it's still yellowy from smoke haze. I have been trying to find out where the fire is, seems not too distant but I could be mistaken. There are web sites where you can look up fires but the closest one showing is way over in Idaho, hundreds of miles away. Kind of over near where DemoTex is for the summer. He'll be busy for a while now. I guess it's fire season now, glad it didn't get rolling in May as usual.
