Scientists are actually proposing a new category to classify hail stones this massive: "gargantuan":



I believe David Letterman proposed the current scientific nomenclature while working as a weatherman: “hail the size of canned hams”

updrafts continue to coat them until they are heavy enough to freefall to the ground. So what kind of updrafts are happening to move a 10 lb iceball back up into the atmosphere?
