It's mid-April and winter is finally trying to visit the Lower 48.

'Temperatures more than 20 degrees below normal are predicted in the central U.S., along with snow.

For many, if not most, it was a wimpy winter in the Lower 48 states. The season ranked as the sixth warmest on record, nearly four degrees above normal. Few locations were colder than average.

But starting this weekend, winter will attempt to launch a revenge tour about a month after its closing date. The central United States is poised to be its main target, but only the West Coast and stifling South Florida will escape the chill.

The National Weather Service’s 6- to 10-day outlook map is smothered in shades of dark blue, conveying high confidence in below-normal temperatures.

The first shot of cold will charge into the north-central United States on Easter weekend as the jet stream takes a massive plunge out of Canada. In the process, a powerful storm is predicted to develop between the Plains and Great Lakes, triggering a likely outbreak of severe thunderstorms in the South on Easter Sunday.

Reinforcing shots of cold are expected to follow that initial blast next week. Between Sunday and Wednesday, temperatures are likely to be 10 to 35 degrees below normal from the Rockies to the Midwest.

Projections indicate temperatures averaged over the entirety of next week may run 10 to 20 degrees below normal over a large swath of the middle of the nation.'>>>
