Atheists to hand out pamphlets in Orange high schools Thursday

It's a shame there isn't a forum on DU that we can put this to get more attention.

Atheists to hand out pamphlets in Orange high schools Thursday

Atheist groups plan to give out materials in 11 Orange County high schools Thursday, a reaction to a Bible distribution at the same schools in January.

"We want to close the door to religion in schools, not open it to Freethought," said David Williamson, organizer of the Central Florida Freethought Community. But "if they're going to have a religious discussion on campus, we need to be a part of it," he said.

The targeted high schools are Apopka, Boone, Colonial, Cypress Creek, Edgewater, Evans, Jones, Timber Creek, University, Wekiva and Winter Park.

A letter to principals from district legal counsel Monday said the handouts are being allowed to avoid a lawsuit from the Freedom From Religion Foundation and Williamson's group. The Bible distribution, in turn, was allowed to avoid a lawsuit from World Changers of Florida, Inc., a group that promotes religion in schools

litigation, rather than as a broad principle of educating students in all aspects of the topic of religion?

Typical American education, I hope not.

They do seem to pay close attention to the ones that have religious overtones. They don't all get locked, but I'm too new to the system to figure out how this one would fly.

Maybe other hosts can pitch in to let us know how they feel about this one?

On what grounds could World Changer of Florida, Inc. file suit if Bible distribution were not allowed in the schools?

I love how this turned out. The religious zealots insist on going into public schools to promote their nonsense and it results in atheists going in and countering their message.

Bet they didn't see that coming!
