Related: About this forumMassachusetts Senate Candidate Calls Boston Bombings a ‘Godless Act’
April 19, 2013 By Hemant Mehta
Michael Sullivan, a former U.S. attorney and current Republican candidate for Senate from Massachusetts, used a throwaway line the other day to describe the Boston bombers but in the process, he slandered all of us who are law-abiding, patriotic atheists:
I dont have any doubt in my mind that they are going to identify the person or people responsible for this horrific, cowardly and godless act. I think there is going to be so much evidence available to the investigators that they will be able to put the pieces together.
-snip-
Its easy to suggest that godless people committed this tragic crime because the stereotype is that were immoral, awful people with no regard for the sanctity of life. None of that is true. You can argue its just a figure of speech and he wasnt actually referring to atheists, per se, but that doesnt excuse the use of the word. Its irresponsible and completely out of line to accuse someone who doesnt believe in God, even in passing, for doing something like this. (Emphasis mine--Rob.)

(48,181 posts)blowing up people at the marathon and blowing up villagers in pakistan. Well the screaming was all one sided, I just had to pick my jaw up off the floor. There really isn't much difference other than which "just so" stories are being used to rationalize atrocities.

(149 posts)it was probably a belief in some god of some sort that drove these two, (and perhaps others involved), to do such an horrific act.
That would be more close to a true statement, as more facts become known. I'm not saying belief in one name of a god or another name of a god is better or worse, all such belief systems often lead to irrational justifications for committing all sorts of senseless acts

(13,485 posts)an act of some God to me. At least by the given attributes of the biblical God, for example. So you might say it was a God like act in that respect.
In any case, you can't use the term god for any depiction of an act. It's ludicrous.

years. Of course that's just his aunt talking. Wouldn't be as well informed as some politician.
Sunday update: not only big brother, but little brother did the five times a day thing. If they are indeed godless, they miss the point of praying somehow.

(1,837 posts)anyone who steps over the line from normal religious belief into criminality and violence like this is deemed 'no longer a member' of the faith, or any faith. so they must be 'godless'.
sadly for Sullivan, there are millions of believers who disagree and hang onto fundamentalist fantasies of armageddon.. like somehow the end of the world is going to be a *good* thing.

God will either smite them, or give them a lotta virgins. Hopefully ugly male troll virgins to mate with for eternity.
