LHC upgrade to open up 'new realm of particle physics'

Engineers have begun a major upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

Their work should double the energy of what's already the most powerful particle accelerator in the world.

BBC News is the first to be allowed to see inside the LHC - on the French-Swiss border - to watch the work being carried out.

Scientists believe the upgrade will enable them to discover new particles which will lead to a more complete theory of how the Universe works.

I have to agree with you on this. I would love for our scientific prowess to become a major focus of our patriotic energies instead of a wasteful and bloated military that just squanders our resources.

I am so envious that we don't have something bigger than the LHC in our country. Instead we spend billions on F-35 airplanes that we don't need. Go figure.

blow MY taxes on another military atrocity somewhere in the Middle East, instead of spending it on something as cool as LHC.

It would put supersymmetric particles within our range!!! Lookin' for sparticles: light Higgsinos via collisions of e+ against e-.
