Last week a Trump supporter said to me on air, Orthodox Jews are more likely to support Trump because liberal Jews tend to be less affiliated and less knowledgeable about Judaism.
This was not the first time I heard this particular talking point as Vice Chair for Media and Policy of Democrats Abroad Israel, Ive been opposite Trumpists enough to hear pretty much everything but this was eye-popping nonetheless.
The arrogance was astounding. I mean, only Trump supporters, with their insatiable appetite for rhetorical twists, emotional manipulations, and gross attacks on entire populations intended to crush anyone not like them can so easily dismiss 79% of American Jews as simply ignorant.
In this case, it was also a wild personal attack on me, the liberal on the panel, who was swiftly labeled as a bad Jew. Much the way Trump tweeted last August that If you want to vote Democrat, you are being very disloyal to Jewish people and very disloyal to Israel.

Interesting tactic.

(91,965 posts)they are presenting sounds like what Lou Holtz was saying about Joe Biden not being a "real Catholic"
I would challenge them with the example of Stephen Miller, whose own family refers to him as a bigot and a hypocrite.

(3,051 posts)Is now you will hear "no true Scotsman" allegations all the time.
And no true Democrat would allow such a fallacy to pass unchallenged! (Ha!)

(3,051 posts)Don't go to an Orthodox Shul.
Because that's pretty much the thinking. I just bite my tongue.
I think as the antisemitic "white shoe" Republicans (e.g., Judge Smalls from Caddy Shack -- James "fuck the Jews, they don't vote for us anyone" Baker) die off with the Bush Dynasty coming to an end more and more orthodox/conservative (religious here, not political) Jews and secular entrepreneurial/business type Jews will be more comfortable in the Republican Party.
Taxes, affirmative action (which has always angered me, but I put up with it), Israel and -- strangely -- tolerance of seriously religious people (regardless of faith) are strong points for the Republican Party and lots of Jewish people. So there is going to be a shift.
The shift is going to get accelerated because of our weakness in rejecting the antisemitic voices (Tlaib, Sarsour, Occupy Wall Street -- and even radical elements in ANTIFA/BLM) on our side.
tRump is so foul and stupid a human, he should slow it down a bit, but the move is going to happen.
If nothing else, simply by birthrate of Orthodox vs. everyone else. I've got 36 grandchildren, for example.
