Russian MPs back harsher anti-blasphemy law

Russian MPs have given initial approval to an anti-blasphemy law with tougher jail terms or fines for anyone found guilty of offending religious feelings.

The bill was drafted last year after the punk band Pussy Riot performed a protest song against President Vladimir Putin in Moscow's main cathedral.
...
The bill says blasphemy could incur up to three years in jail or a fine of up to 300,000 roubles ($9,700;£6,300).
...
Russian commentators say the bill appears to have strong backing from Mr Putin. It was passed by the Duma - Russia's lower house - in a first reading on Tuesday.

The 'religions' may have changed from Russian Orthodoxy to Emperor Worship and back again; but the anti-democratic principles haven't.

Murdering someone to grab his wallet: not a hate crime.
Murdering someone because he's black: hate crime.

Do go on.

So much for freedom of speech, but then again they never really had it there. I wonder what the Russian Church will say on this. IMO the Russian Church embarrassed itself by associating with Putin in the first place.

..from one extreme to another.

lenin was what.. 1/2 mongolion? and they ruled russia longer than the czars. we will never understand them and the complexities of their history like we think we do, and i doubt they will ever really grok us either.

russia is the 'texas' of nations. it's big, self-absorbed, weird, and polarized.
