Jewish Religious Objects Found Burned On Holocaust Remembrance Day
Public Advocate De Blasio: Vandalism In Brooklyn Was A Hate Crime
April 8, 2013 6:52 PM
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) Public Advocate Bill de Blasio said Monday that he believes the burning of mezuzot in Brooklyn on Holocaust Remembrance Day was a hate crime.
Police said the 11 mezuzot were burned at 85 Taylor St. in South Williamsburg on Monday. The NYPD told WCBS 880 the vandalism had not been confirmed as a bias-motivated incident, and was under investigation as property damage.
But de Blasio said a hate crime was the only explanation.
Nothing but hatred can explain why someone would burn mezuzahs on Yom Hashoah, the day we remember the six million Jews killed during the Holocaust, he said in a statement. This is a sickening act of prejudice that strikes at the very core of who we are as a city.
