'VeggieTales' creator Phil Vischer releases viral video on race in America

From the article:

Earlier this week, Phil Vischer — creator of “VeggieTales” and voice of Bob the Tomato in the popular Christian animated series — posted a now viral video called “Race in America” that attempts to answer the question: “Why are people so angry?”
Filled with graphics, photo montages and factoids— and a few comic asides — that make the concept of systemic racism accessible for all ages, the 17-minute tutorial had garnered more than 2.8 million views by Friday (June 19).
“The average Black household has one-tenth the wealth of the average white household,” Vischer said in the video. “This didn’t happen by accident. It happened by policy.”

I bet there are some dvd's being thrown in the trash soon.

Those veggie tales videos are a staple in the families here in Texas. I once had to listen to veggie tale music for a short trip with some "friends", it was interesting.

I am glad to see that the creator has some sense.

I expected anyone associated with pious vegetables to be part of the rank and file, "God made it this way" mindset.

If this fellow is willing to accept that human decisions and policies change the world maybe some other people who would rather wait cheerfully for the end of the world will wake up and try to start making it better.

I know quite a few very progressive theists. I count myself among them.

One hopes his message will be well received.

or the man who created them.

I was working on the information provided in assigning him the category of Bible-believing Christian. I used to be one of them, and I know that the mind set held by the majority is that this world is nothing more than a testing ground to refine the believers of the Bible god in preparation for eternity.

Based on what I have read, many of the founding fathers self-identified as theist, and their were progressive people for their times. That said, they weren't perfect, of course. And I am reminding myself that you aren't perfect either, and I am trying to get past my feelings of having been condescended to.

In all honesty, I am doing a lousy, lousy job of it.

But yes, many Christians do believe what you stated.

I knew nothing about Veggie Tales, but I loved the article and wanted to share it.

Have a good evening.

so I hope that can have a real effect. There will be many people who won't read a Ta-Nehisi Coates article, but will watch something from the creator of the cartoons they show their children.

As to the term indoctrination, that is simply a negative description of the group socialization that we all experience.

Group socialization is not always indoctrination. Indoctrination impliess a religious (= not provable) doctrine, while socialization does not.

Not everybody is told that the horrible stories from the Bible are mandates from god. That kind of socialization is rather specific to ignorant religious groups.

Sure, this video is good work, as you say. But he has done a LOT of really bad work, and this in no way mitigates his attempts to make the awful Bible palatable for children.

Country is the substitute for a deity. For most of US history, the foundational genocide and racism that is US history was portrayed as necessary to civilize the savages.
