The trade that never was: Montana for Elway

UPDATE: The would-be trade came as news to Montana, who took to his Twitter account this afternoon:”Can’t wait to watch 30 for 30 when I get home,” he wrote. “Heard I was almost traded for Elway.”

Fifteen months after “The Catch,” Joe Montana could have been part of “The Trade.”

In ESPN Films “30 for 30” documentary “Elway to Marino” which chronicles the historic 1983 NFL draft, John Elway’s agent, Marvin Demoff, dropped this bombshell: Bill Walsh explored the possibility of trading Joe Montana in a deal that would have sent Elway to San Francisco.

On April 6, 1983, 20 days before the draft, Demoff wrote this in his diary: “Discussion with Bill Walsh. Would be interested in Elway if he could trade Montana.”

(SNIP)

“I called him,” Accorsi said. “And I didn’t offer, but I explored the Montana thing. And … the kind of person he really is – his stature and how he lived up to it – he said to me ‘I could just never trade him.’ That’s what he said to me and I think it was, at that time, he was not through winning championships with Montana yet.”

Interesting that Montana found out about the trade like everyone else did last night.

I have really enjoyed all the "30 for 30" movies on ESPN. They've done a great job on them.

Peyton Manning (R) would now own a string of cheap-ass Papa John's around the Bay Area.
