Raiders trade for Matt Flynn

The Oakland Raiders acquired quarterback Matt Flynn from the Seattle Seahawks for two draft picks Monday -- a fifth-round pick in the 2014 draft and a conditional pick in 2015.

Both teams announced that the trade had been finalized Monday afternoon.

The Raiders also are trying to finalize a trade that will send Carson Palmer to the Arizona Cardinals for minimal compensation, sources told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Palmer failed to get Oakland to the playoffs in 2011, falling one game short, then the Raiders regressed and went 4-12 this past year. With Palmer owed $13 million for this season and the Raiders in rebuilding mode, general manager Reggie McKenzie decided to get a quarterback he was familiar with from his time in Green Bay.

Raiders GM Reggie McKenzie is undoing years of questionable, and rash, personnel decisions.

This is not going to be a quick fix, Raiders fans.

Report: Arizona Cardinals close to acquiring Carson Palmer from Oakland Raiders

<snip>

The trade is expected to involve draft picks, with the Cardinals sending a mid-to late-round pick to Oakland for Palmer, and perhaps a late-round pick return.

Acquiring Palmer is not a simple transaction. He became available only after he rejected a pay cut from the Raiders, who then traded for Seattle quarterback Matt Flynn.

Before trading for Palmer, the Cardinals had to be assured he was willing to take less than the $13 million he was due this season. USA Today is reporting that Palmer's new deal in Arizona would be worth about $8 million this season.

<snip>

Palmer, 6-feet-5-inch, 230 pounds, seems to have the attributes coach Bruce Arians favors in a quarterback: size and the ability to throw deep. Arians offensive system is not unlike the one Palmer played in with the Bengals from 2004 through 2010.

As far as QBs go, he would be the best QB the team has had since Warner. However, I strongly want them to start young. As far as the Raiders, I think they are good moves if they do end up trading Palmer--they didn't give up a lot for Flynn, and those draft picks could be replaced with even better picks from the Cards.

This probably also means that the Raiders are drafting Geno Smith with the #3 pick.

If that happens, it'll be interesting to see if Flynn has to backup yet another QB that's better than him.

"This is not going to be a quick fix, Raiders fans."

These bums haven't made the postseason in about a decade now. And even in 2010, they at least swept the division, but now it looks like they're going backwards. Will they ever reach the postseason again? This is crazy...

They're not just lacking in talent, they're lacking in bodies. And they're in cap trouble. McKenzie has to exorcise nearly All Demons, aka Al Davis.
