QUITMAN, Ga. Nancy Dennard was in a festive holiday mood when police arrived at her front door in the early morning of Dec. 21, 2010.
Her sons birthday, on Christmas Eve, was three days away, and he was supposed to arrive in town the next day.
Dennard, a county school board member who had just turned 50 and recently helped elect a slate of new candidates, slept in that morning and was still in bed when her husband left for work a little after 7 a.m. She thought it odd when he returned a few minutes later to wake her. Theres some people here that want to see you, he told her. Theyre law enforcement.
Dennard was taken away in handcuffs, placed in a squad car and spirited into the police station.
