Black Lives Matter co-founder says obtaining justice means taking action
SOUTH BEND — Opal Tometi spoke softly and with a deliberate tone about the need for all to get involved to address racism, bigotry, climate change and the issues that have come to a focal point in history.
The co-founder of the Black Lives Matter movement asked an audience Monday night in an auditorium at DeBartolo Hall at the University of Notre Dame who they would have been if they have lived in the time of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.
“Would have you been in a rally? Would you have volunteered and prepared meals for an event?” she said.
“We are in a defining moment in history, and what we do now will absolutely change the trajectory of our entire world. Be it the climate, be it how we treat black people, be it how we deal with sexual assault in our community,” she said. “How we deal with it and how we show up right now matters.”
On a day celebrating King, Tometi spelled out ongoing examples of implicit bias and the need for communities to continue what she called the unapologetic goal of seeking racial and social justice.
