This is a fun one: 40 Incredible Photos from Brazils First Natural Hair Empowerment March http://blackgirllonghair.com/2015/11/40-incredible-photos-from-brazils-first-natural-hair-empowerment-march/
"Brazil is a country with the largest black population outside of the African continent. However it has often been the subject of dialogue regarding the strenuous challenges many of its black citizens face on a daily basis. When it comes to natural hair, the attitudes toward it are strained. Just this past week, we covered the backlash, talented Afro-Brazilian actress Taís Araújo received after revealing her natural hair.
Organizers Lorena Lacerda, Andrea and Naiara Souza Gouveia say the idea from the march was launched from their Curled and Curled Facebook group and the need for such an event is clear:
Women suffer from both sides. Racism and sexism. Therefore, we use the concept of empowerment. From the aesthetics, the woman empowers and empowers the community [translated]

(14,176 posts)One of my colleagues was working on a project a few years ago about black hairstyles, only she was interested in hair (and tats) in the post-Jordan NBA. Some good stuff
If anyone's interested, Kobena Mercer wrote a great article about black hair maybe 20 years ago called Black Hair/Style Politics that looks at black hair and ideology

(8,709 posts)Every first Sunday of October, Ecuadors Afro-Ecuadorean community celebrate this day after it became a hallmark in 1997 following a national mobilization that pushed Congress to declare the National Day of the Black Ecuadorean, the recognition of Alonso Illescas as national hero, and the inclusion of Afro-Ecuadoreans into national history.
For Victor Zambrano, an Afro-Ecuadorean student and activist from the coastal province of Esmeraldas, this day is bitter-sweet; a reason to celebrate what Afro-Ecuaodoreans have gained, but also to remember the challenges ahead for the 604,000-strong racial minority.
'On this day we have to remember all the contributions we have made as a people and bring it, together with our history, to the rest of the people because many dont know it, which enables a lot of forms of discrimination,' he added."
