For basically the same reason.

I think it's a chance to score brownie points with a large demographic w. not much of a downside.

And it's utterly formulaic: "Wow. This pope's really cooooool. He washes his own dishes and takes the bus."

M$M likes this sort of situation. They basically recycle the formula from when the LAST pope died.

i don't watch corporate media much but i go to msnbc every morning and listen to rachel while i'm getting ready for work. the headline this morning really bugged me. "lapsed"? how about enlightened?
this is not a theocracy.
but you are right. NPR used up my whole drive to work recently on this guy. i was disgusted. and am.

Like ... you'd still be a Catholic but you were just too damn lazy to get outta bed on Sunday mornings.

Instead of..... you read a lot of books and gave it a lot of thought and that combined w. real-life experience helped you GROW OUT OF IT.
