OREGON CITY, OR (KPTV) -
Oregon City police released the names Monday of the people involved in an accidental shooting that left a 9-year-old girl dead.
Shayla Shonneker, 9, was playing in her backyard while her mother's boyfriend, 32-year-old Joseph Wolters, was handling his gun inside the home.
As Wolters was practicing holstering and un-holstering his gun, it went off, police said, and the bullet traveled outside and struck Shonneker.
Police and paramedics first received the call just before 5 p.m. and responded to the 2000 block of 12th Street in Oregon City.
A LifeFlight helicopter was soon called in and Shonneker was rushed to Oregon Health & Science University Hospital, where she died.

What's with the holstering and un-holstering of the gun? It appears as though this guy was a John Wayne wannabe trying to live a gun nut fantasy.

(17,671 posts)but you're supposed to clear the weapon first.

(17,502 posts)who carries as a condition of employment a "gun nut"?

(9,644 posts)his firearm before practicing with it inside a home, I wouldn't trust him with a loaded firearm.
Dry fire, practice holstering/drawing all you want inside. Just unload it first.

(15,396 posts)It's easier not to shoot holes in stuff if you unload before working on your tactical response times while in your home.

If you want something done right -- you do it yourself.

(331 posts)I got these after a 4 day defensive handgun course I took a couple years ago. I think rules 3 and 7 are particularly applicable. When I moved into a tri-level last summer that had no ballistic walls, I bought a really nice airsoft replica of my g19 to practice with so I never have to point my real gun at anything I'm not willing to destroy.
Dry Practice Checklist:
1. Unload the weapon and all magazines. Place ALL live ammunition into a container, and then remove the container from the dry practice area.
2. Designate a dry practice area and use that same area every time. Your dry practice area should be quite and an area where you will not be disturbed. Dry firing of you weapon should only be done in that area and you practice target should only be displayed during your training sessions.
3. The wall you practice dry firing your weapon at MUST meet the safe direction rule and MUST be able to stop a bullet if you should unintentionally or negligently discharge your weapon!
4. Be sure to Press Check the weapon to verify it is unloaded. Perform regular press checks and get in the habit of checking the status of the chamber.
5. Do not use a mirror for your target. You will have the tendency to look at your reflection rather than the front sight.
6. Make sure you perform each technique correctly. Consistent repetitions makes perfect practice! Dont get into the habit of improperly practicing the techniques!
7. Change you mental focus to Dry Practice Mode. Concentrate on the dry practice drills and avoid all distractions. It at any point you are interrupted, cease dry practice. If you decide to resume dry practice, start over at step #1.
8. Once you have made the decision to stop dry practice. STOP-DO NOT CONTINUE! Restore the weapon back to storage mode or carry mode and put the weapon away. The session is finished- no one more time drills!
There are two points in dry practice where accidents occur: Failure to ensure the gun in unloaded prior to practicing. Stopping dry practice and reloading the weapon, then you decide to dry fire the weapon one more time.

(331 posts)It was great training, and I'm glad I went, but "Dr" Piazza is a bit of a narcissist and his junk got old fast. I do hear they recently got real bathrooms, however ( they only had port-o-potties when I was there). I think there are a lot better training programs out there that don't have the "please oh please buy a lifetime membership so I can turn myself into a celebrity in my own mind" overtones My instructors were great, and I learned a ton (including that I needed to replace my CZ with a Glock), but the hour long infomercials during lunch were a bummer.
That said, I definitely, definitely suggest getting professional training.

(4,984 posts)fortunately you can dodge his infomercials if you don't want/need his patented CCW permit class.
as to the port-o-potties, one of the geniuses in my group ignored the "don't take your pistol in there" and dropped it (and you can guess exactly where it ended up).
I got a deal on a "lifetime" membership for (IIRC) $150. it covers the 2 day pistol, rifle and shotgun course as well as the 4 day for pistol.
But yeah, it's like going to a timeshare pitch.

(2,708 posts)To be fair, a lot of bum luck that a bullet from inside a house gets outside & fatally hits someone, like one chance in a half million. Had he been 'outside' trying out his snap fire & quick fire, he'd be an idiot. But he's still negligent & gundeath culpable, even tho he might be a decent fellow, another case of 'guns ruined my life'.
But, truth & consequences bites when murphy's law comes into play.
A law abiding citizen moments before the gundeath accd'g to nra, a careless negligent gunowner the moment after, thrown under wayno's gun bus.
But then, years later, the nra outreaches it's money grubbing hand again, & offers to help get his gunrights restored (if they ever really got dismissed to begin with - he's not a criminal); I mean he's still part of the vast potential in the market for guns you know? Why deny him his 2nd pretendment right just because he shot & killed someone accidentally, he's 'suffered enough' with the emotional pain, but still needs a gun to fend off govt tyranny & hell bent thugs, sheeesh.
I mean look at it this way. He's now in a special category of gun owners inflicting accidental gun injury, which includes past vice president dick cheney who sometimes jokes about his negligent escapade at the faux quail/pheasant hunt (ended up only eating crow). Dick is indeed lucky his rightwing stature, a rare bird who gets an exemption from murphy's law, even tho he came within a half inch, of a gundeath.
I doubt tho, wolters will be joking much.
My final concern is whether wolters will even want to own guns again, or visit the nearest buyback.

Fantastic. Means I win.
You do realize your screenname conveys a double meaning. Comment? Explanation?
Response to CokeMachine Eleanors38 It's like reading a stage play script. And it isn't Tennessee Williams.
Oh look. Asinine exaggeration for affect followed up by a childish ad hominem.
To prove, what? that you know who tennessee williams was?
Why don't you do both of us a favor, put me on 'ignore'.
You two are tweety birds of a feather - posts longer than a dozen words, evidently puts you in conniption fits.
