1. My life is likely to last 10 to 15 years. Any separation from you will be painful: remember that before you get me.
2. Give me time to understand what you want of me.
3. Place your trust in me- it is crucial to my well being.
4. Do not be angry at me for long, and do not lock me up as punishment.
... 5. You have your work, your entertainment, and your friends. I only have you.
6. Talk to me sometimes. Even if I don't understands your words, I understand your voice when it is speaking to me.
7. Be aware that how ever you treat me, I will never forget.
8. Remember before you hit me that I have teeth that could easily hurt you, but I choose not to bite you because I love you.
9. Before you scold me for being uncooperative, obstinate,or lazy, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I might not be getting the right food, or I have been out too long, or my heart is getting to old and weak.
10. Take care of me when I get old; you too will grow old. Go with me on difficult journeys. Never say: "I cannot bear to watch" or "Let it happen in my absence." Everything is easier for me if you are there, even my death.
Remember that I love you

(14,549 posts)They don't know how long they will live and their concept of time is very different than ours. They live in the moment. Time won't help them understand you because dogs don't understand language the way we do. They UNDERSTAND but not the way we do and I cringe when I hear people say their dog is stupid.
I have overheard people threatening their dogs and, to me, that is the start of abuse.
10 Things My dog would tell you
1. I am a big responsibility and will be for my entire life. If you take me home then please be ready for the long haul.
2. I won't always be a puppy. I will get bigger. I have lots of energy. I may bark. These things don't mean "abandon me at the local shelter" (see item #1)
3. I am a pack animal and it stresses me out to be alone. Consider a second dog (or a cat) if you are not going to be home with me on a regular basis. Or perhaps there is a neighbor who would enjoy my company when you are away.
4. I understand when you say "no!" but please, please, please tell me what 'yes' is! In fact you can probably skip "no" altogether if you direct me toward an alternative behavior. Simply saying "no" to one action leaves a lot of other options -- narrow it down for me please.
5. I am incapable of multi tasking. For example I all but can't hear you when I am engrossed in sniffing. The upside, if you need to trim my nails put some peanut butter on the bottom of a bucket and I will lick off and not even see you trimming my nails. Heck I won't remember anything but the peanut butter.
6. The only time that you should correct me is DURING the action which you are correcting. Not 5 minutes later. Not 10 seconds later. If you correct me later, then I just think you are angry (or psychotic).
7. I want to please you. If I seem not to understand you, don't get angry. I am trying my best. Take a deep breath and try something else.
8. When you yell "DON'T BARK!" to me, it just sounds like you are also barking. Model the energy you want from me and I will sync with you.
9. I will explore. I will seek out food or things to chew on. If you put something where I can get it and I do then don't get angry -- learn not to. You're the smart(er) one remember?
10. Enjoy me. I am pure love. The most import moment in our lives is this one, right now. I like to run and socialize and eat and be happy. The secret of Life is to say "Yes! Say yes to Life" so I am here to help you with that.

(6,151 posts)#5 was the main reason I got Brigid. For her sake and Molly's more than mine. How it blesses me to wake up in the morning and see them curled together in a tight little ball. During the day they just wear each other out chasing and play fighting. About everything. Today I saw Brigid pick up a leaf, prance by Molly with it, and then take off for dear life with MM at her heels.
When it comes to my own selfish interests, #1 is a major reason for Brigid's inclusion. I don't know how I can ever face being entirely dogless for any length of time again. The last one nearly killed me. With any luck I won't lose both of these at the same time.
