Rattlesnake Vaccine Can Be Beneficial For Dogs

By Stacy Rothman, DVM
Special to the Acorn

Every year between April and October veterinarians see an influx of rattlesnake bites in Southern California.

The western diamondback is the most common rattlesnake seen locally. The snake thrives during the heat of our spring and summer months, when pet owners spend more time walking dogs on trails and letting them play outdoors. A dog’s natural curiosity can result in its being bitten, with potentially life-threatening consequences.

Many veterinary hospitals recommend the rattlesnake vaccine, which can help dogs develop antibodies to neutralize the venom. It’s thought that dogs given the rattlesnake vaccine experience less skin swelling and tissue damage from the bite wounds.

The vaccine may decrease the amount of antivenin needed and allow more time to get your dog to the hospital.

Even with the rattlesnake vaccine on board, immediate veterinary care and treatment are essential for surviving the bite.

Never knew they had such a vaccine until just watch a tv news report on it. Only given to dogs that live in rural areas and/or hunting dogs. The report says it costs around $50 and sometimes an allergic reaction can occur.

I would have seriously considered it when I lived on Trinity Bay, TX with a my lab and G. Shepard. How they never got bit but a water moccasin I'll never know.

But I'd caution against its use on Chows, especially older ones, who are notoriously reactive to many things. If there's a potential reaction to the vaccine, they'd be better off taking their chances. If you're in an extremely rural area, good luck finding a vet quick enough anyway.

In AZ I paid good $ to have people catch king snakes to keep the rattlers away. Get enough of those babies crawling around and you'll have neither rodents nor king snakes. Actually, they can keep away unwanted bi-pedal visitors too. Once I figured that out and even posted a sign at the end of my drive, people would telephone me to come after their captures but wouldn't bring them to me on a bet. I lived safely at the end of a 5-mile dirt road for 8 years, all 'alone' except for the dogs and horses and snakes etc and nobody ever bothered me a bit. Go figure. Fourteen years much the same in CA, same result.

Which reminds me, as an aside, that friends once urged me to take a camping trip with them to get away from it all. They lived in town. I asked them why I needed to go look at somebody else's trees. Don't worry, they took it well.
