The next time you've used up your green onions, put the white ends into a jar of water. They'll start to grow almost immediately. This also works for celery stalks.

(10,133 posts)I am tempted to try the celery trick, though.
You can also sow garlic cloves that have started to sprout, and regular onions and sweet potatoes and carrot tops. You supposedly can get pineapple tops to sprout, but I've never had any luck with them.

(16,334 posts)I buy green onions but find I don't always use them up. But the minute I compost the ones going bad, I come across a recipe that needs them. If I could just keep some I wouldn't have this problem!

(12,704 posts)that can be grown this way. As I avoid buying celery given the amount of pesticide residue it has compared to other veggies, I want to try this with organic celery which I don't buy because its so pricey. A occasional purchase I could afford.

(50,130 posts).....in a zip lock baggie. It's very handy to have that available when you just need some amount for an ingredient. I figured that out after years of throwing slimy gr onions away out of the fridge.

(16,334 posts)and then it's too late. I do save asparagus ends, celery tops, etc. and use them to make vegetable broth. I need to remember to do the same with the onions!

(5,317 posts)They go bad so fast I freeze the remainder from the recipe the day I use it. I'm keeping an eye on all my fresh vegetables and freeze them when they start to turn. The potatoes and carrots usually end up in the homemade dog food.

(106,886 posts)Never actually pull them. They don't freeze here, so I just keep snipping. I cut out tough celery stalks and flowering stalks as they come up, but scallion flower stalks are a great garnish for a dish.
