Is this amazing or what? Plant your green onion stubs — you'll have a new bunch in just ten days

The next time you've used up your green onions, put the white ends into a jar of water. They'll start to grow almost immediately. This also works for celery stalks.

I can't wait to try growing onions and celery.

I've got some in the fridge and I hate the idea of wasting anything. I'll give it a shot this weekend.

I am tempted to try the celery trick, though.

You can also sow garlic cloves that have started to sprout, and regular onions and sweet potatoes and carrot tops. You supposedly can get pineapple tops to sprout, but I've never had any luck with them.

I buy green onions but find I don't always use them up. But the minute I compost the ones going bad, I come across a recipe that needs them. If I could just keep some I wouldn't have this problem!

Thanks!

that can be grown this way. As I avoid buying celery given the amount of pesticide residue it has compared to other veggies, I want to try this with organic celery which I don't buy because its so pricey. A occasional purchase I could afford.

.....in a zip lock baggie. It's very handy to have that available when you just need some amount for an ingredient. I figured that out after years of throwing slimy gr onions away out of the fridge.

and then it's too late. I do save asparagus ends, celery tops, etc. and use them to make vegetable broth. I need to remember to do the same with the onions!

I love tips from this group!

They go bad so fast I freeze the remainder from the recipe the day I use it. I'm keeping an eye on all my fresh vegetables and freeze them when they start to turn. The potatoes and carrots usually end up in the homemade dog food.

Never actually pull them. They don't freeze here, so I just keep snipping. I cut out tough celery stalks and flowering stalks as they come up, but scallion flower stalks are a great garnish for a dish.
