http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-22152901Drinking a cup of beetroot juice can lower blood pressure, researchers say.
Drinking 250ml (8oz) cut high blood pressure readings by 10mm of mercury (mmHg) in a study of 15 patients, bringing some into the normal range, the journal Hypertension reports.
Most marked after three to six hours, the effect was detectable a day later.
Scientists say the nitrate in beetroot widens blood vessels to aid flow. And many people with angina use a nitrate drug to ease their symptoms.

(57,936 posts)I think it is because the first beets I tasted were pickled. Pickled beets are really good. I haven't tasted them in years. You might like them. Have you ever tried them? Of course, they probably don't lower your blood pressure. They may be pickled in salt. I don't know.

I see beets, in any iteration, and I shudder!

(57,936 posts)For me, it's tapioca pudding and pure black tea. Same kinds of experiences. Same just really deep distaste for them.
Funny, isn't it.
And good experiences in childhood stick with us too. All our lives it seems.

(135,425 posts)A childhood favorite, made with love by a great grandmother!
And black tea (with sugar and milk in a very specific ratio) was another great-grandmotherly offering that warms the cockles of my heart!
Send your tapioca and tea to me, and I'll send my beets to you...together, we can get through this!!!

(8,701 posts)and add boiled eggs - then you have pickled beets and pickled purple eggs. It's the nitric oxide in beets that lowers your blood pressure. The amino acid, L'arginine, does the same thing. I take lots of L'arginine and juice beets to naturally control my blood pressure. Watermelon also has nitric oxide. Also, if you check on line, you will also see nitric oxide is good for your sex drive too.

(53,031 posts)Do they just mean beets?
From wiki:
The beetroot, also known in North America as the table beet, garden beet, red or golden beet, or informally simply as the beet, refers to any of the cultivated varieties of beet (Beta vulgaris) grown for their edible taproots, especially B. vulgaris L. subsp. conditiva.[1] They are among the most commonly encountered varieties in North America, Central America, and Europe.
Never had a golden beet, before.
